Think gasoline is expensive in the States? It’s nearly $8 a gallon in England. But the price difference is even greater for Coca-Cola. Available from vending machines scattered across the jamboree site, the 12-ounce can of soda sells for 1 pound — that’s $2 U.S.
Scouts are just wild about Harry — Potter, that is. Among the items for sale at the multiple outlets of Sainsbury’s grocery chain on the jamboree site are copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and more than 500 copies were sold today from just one location. (There must be lots of flashlights burning inside Scouts’ tents at night.) Interestingly, the Harry Potter books published in the U.K. are different from those in the U.S.A. They are available with two different dust jackets and include British spellings. The cover illustration of Harry and his gang of wizards is also different from the U.S. version.
One World, the official newspaper of the 21st World Jamboree, reported on the memorable arrival of California’s World Jamboree Troop 410. After 20 hours of flying, the Scouts learned that none of their luggage arrived with them, except for one piece which belonged to (wouldn’t you know it) one of the Scoutmasters. The Scouts journeyed on to the jamboree site, put up their tents in the dark, and borrowed sleeping bags for their first night in camp. Here’s hoping their luggage arrives soon.
