Boy Scout Saves Homes From Fire

Don’t try this at home, kids.

This story is a few months old, but we thought it was worth it to share it here.

Chris Simmons, a Boy Scout from California, was on his way home from school when he saw a wildfire creeping near a series of homes. Chris joined a handful of other neighborhood heroes and promptly ran over and began putting out the hotspots using residents’ hoses and fire extinguishers.

At one point, Chris, nearly dehydrated from the heat, walked into an empty house to get a drink of water. He realized he had left muddy footprints on the carpet, so he left a note to apologize.

Then it was back to fighting fires.

(Please, guys: Chris is a very brave kid and we think he deserves recognition for his actions. But this doesn’t mean it’s OK to go around fighting fires on your own. If you spot a fire, call 9-1-1 and be really, really careful.)

The Scouting Around blog is your source for Scouting news. Get ideas for your troop by reading about Scouting activities across the country. Biking in Buffalo? Caving in California? Fishing in Florida? Mountain climbing in Montana? Shooting in South Carolina? It's all right here.

Is your unit going on a great fishing trip? Or maybe you’re taking an awesome trek in the mountains or a cool dive under the sea? Whatever your adventure, Boys’ Life might want to tag along.

We’re deciding which Super Scouting Outings to feature in future issues, and your trip could be next. But we need to hear about it as far in advance as possible.
