Scouts Build, Donate Bateau

A group of California Boy Scouts raised more than $12,000 to construct a wooden bateau — a flat-bottomed riverboat similar to the ones used by the Corps of Discovery 200 years ago — then donated it to a museum.

The Corps of Discovery, also known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, used bateaus like this one to explore the Missouri River. The Scouts recreated the expedition by sailing their bateau, along with a handful of canoes, down the Missouri for three days.
