It might be the middle of winter, but it’s not too early to think about what you’re going to do for summer camp.
At the Great Lakes Council‘s Fort Pontiac in Lake Orion, Mich., Scouts can spend their camp time doing pioneer skills training, including blacksmithing, woodworking with only hand tools, bead working and clothes making. In other words, you’re learning skills that settlers from the 1700s needed to survive.
The fort features a kitchen, dining shelter and three craft buildings. Scouts can earn the Fort Pontiac Challenge Patch by meeting requirements in four pioneer skills: blacksmithing, woodworking, cooking and life skills.

Unfortunately today, it was announced that Camp Agawam will be closing effective January 1 2013. This wonderful program will no longer be available.

This is such a wonderful program with the most dedicated Scouters in the world doing their best to provide an amazing opportunity to explore lost arts from olden days. Go hand out with them for a weekend. You won’t be sorry!
