You Can Earn The Scuba Merit Badge (Almost) Anywhere

There’s some awesome scuba diving to be found in Hawaii. Some would say the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia is even better.

But you don’t have to live in a tropical paradise environment to earn the BSA’s Scuba Diving merit badge. Troop 366 from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, is proof of that.

Eight Scouts from Troop 366 earned their open water certification and their Scuba merit badge last summer, and they didn’t have to travel to a different continent to do it.  The first step to scuba training takes place in “confined water” like a swimming pool.

For their open-water training, the Scouts headed to nearby Beaver Lake in Arkansas, where they spent two days and completed a total of five dives.
