Stop 22: Pittsburgh, Pa.

Life Scout Dakota Chirdon is on a mission to make sure that nobody within his community of Pittsburgh goes hungry. To reach that goal, Dakota plays a big part in Pittsburgh’s annual Scouting for Food campaign, which was highlighted during Adventure Base 100′s latest stop.

Dakota collects cans and boxes of food from generous citizens and helps distribute those items to people in need. The support he gets from the community is overwhelming, he says. So much so that he barely has enough room to store all of the donations.

“My basement pretty much looks like the back of a grocery store once we get done with the drive,” he said.

Dakota’s story is emblematic of the larger success of the Scouting for Food program in Pittsburgh. This year, the program announced that it had collected its 100 millionth unit of food. Just in time for the 100th Anniversary of the BSA.
