After more than 60 years at the bottom of Lake Michigan, a World War II-era fighter plane was pulled from the water this week. The F6F-3 Hellcat, piloted by Lt. Walter Elcock, crashed during a training flight on Jan. 5, 1945. It hit the water about 50 miles off the coast of Chicago and settled 250 feet below the lake’s surface.
Now that the plane is back on dry land, it will be put on display in a museum. Elcock, who is now 89 and living in Atlanta, Ga., was represented at the plane’s removal by his grandson.
