Deer Species Rediscovered

No one on Earth had seen a Sumatran muntjac since 1930. That is, until a photographer captured one in 2002 while the small deer was caught in a hunter’s snare. The photo, released for the first time last week, shows the dog-sized muntjac in the mountains of Indonesia’s Kerinci-Seblat National Park.

“This is an important discovery and it adds to our knowledge of the specialness of Sumatran fauna,” said professor Colin Groves, the taxonomist who confirmed the identity of the animal.
