A Shark’s Virgin Birth

For the second time in history, scientists have confirmed the birth of a shark without any genetic material from a male. A female Atlantic blacktip shark at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center carried the “virgin birth” shark.

This type of birth is called asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis. The first such case among sharks involved a pup born to a hammerhead at a zoo in Omaha, Neb. Scientists are still trying to determine how often asexual reproduction may occur among sharks.
