1,000-mph Rocket Car

The Bloodhound Supersonic Car — a rocket car that can travel up to 1,000 miles per hour — was unveiled Thursday at London’s Science Museum. Traveling at 1,000 mph, or Mach 1.4, would beat the current low altitude record for aircraft of 994 mph.

Andy Green, a Royal Air Force fighter pilot, will be the vehicle’s driver. He set the current land speed record of 763 mph in Oct. 1997. A team is currently looking for a site for the Bloodhound to reach top speed. The site needs to be perfectly flat and without vegetation for 10 miles. It also needs to be reliably dry for three months out of the year.

Sweet! How could this thing beat the low-altitude aircraft speed record? If it did break the record, it might not be recognized, because it isn’t an aircraft. It’s still cool, though. When will it be tested?
