Merit badge for Beekeeping

Hey, Pedro, I noticed a merit badge for Beekeeping on an old sash. What causes a merit badge to get dropped?
– Kyle F., Baltimore, Md.

Falling interest knocks merit badges off the list, Kyle, and sometimes merit badges are incorporated into more comprehensive badges. For example, many of the old agricultural merit badges have been merged into Animal Science and Plant Science.

Wow, I am saddened that they dropped this merit badge. I earned it, and still keep bees to this day.

  2. PPS VA says:

Our troop is really hoping this will be reactivated! We have a bee keeper in our group who would love to educate the scouts about this important topic.

  3. cross says:

i really wanted to earn it

  4. Tad says:

It’s a shame that this merit badge was dropped. So much new interest has come up due to Colony Colapse Disorder and new pushes to live more natural lives. BSA should really consider reintroducing this badge. I am a beekeeper and an Eagle Scout and was interested in becoming a couselor in this area.
