Why are the Eagle palms bronze then gold then silver?

Dear Pedro, Why are the Eagle palms bronze then gold then silver, as opposed to bronze, silver, gold, like the Olympic medals?
—Thomas L., Whitman, Mass.

The order of Eagle palms is a Scouting convention that dates from when they were first introduced in 1927, Thomas. Venturing awards also are Bronze, Gold and Silver (the highest). My burroshoes look almost silver. Maybe I’ll point that out to The Boss, he probably needs a good yuk about now.

If you check your Olympic History, the order of the medals in the 1896 Olympics was Silver for First, Gold Second and Bronze third. It was later changed but the Romans saw silver as being more “pure”, they had no idea of how we would value gold versus silver.
