Reversible rain jacket

Q. Dear Gear Guy, I’ve been searching everywhere for a reversible rain jacket, with one side to be waterproof, the other side just to keep me warm. Think you can help?
—Lost Luis, Dumfries, Va.

A. Hey Luis, Thanks for the question. I can definitely tell you why you haven’t been able to find such a jacket: because it doesn’t exist (at least not as far as I know). Here’s the deal, you’re better off layering with a fleece type pullover to keep you warm, and an inexpensive water-resistant shell jacket for when it’s raining. Cold and raining? Wear them both together. Companies like Columbia ( sell versatile 2-in-1 jackets that are basically a waterproof shell with a zip out fleece liner — it’s all about the layering!

The jacket you are describing certainly DOES exist. I have a Prada reversible windbreaker that fits the bill, and I have also seen a 3/4 coat by Zegna. I’m sure other, less-expensive brands exist.

I’m not 100% sure as of now, but so far I’m loving my basic Frogg Toggs rain set (pants and jacket). With more time I will determine if I’ll move on to something eles. Not only are they waterproof, breathable, and ultra light… BUT AFFORDABLE TOO. They’ve got a newer technology as of late but the original tech works wonderful so far.

I use an military-issue M65 ECWCS (Extremely Cold Weather Combat System) jacket. The outside is coated with a water-repellent substance, and comes with a removable inner liner. I have used this jacket for years, and I have yet to encounter any problems with the system. They run anywhere from $35 used to over $100 new (the new Gore Tex ones). They are extremely effective at keeping you both dry and warm.
