why does my yoyo come up even when i dont tug it up
If the yoyo isnt more than $15.00, then dont buy it. Those cheapo yoyos cant even do the simplest sleeper.

Dont get yoyos from wallgreens! Get a duncan metal drifter or a dark magic 2 or any other butterfly yoyos that has metal things on the side.
I just bought a Duncan ProYo. Works great for a begginer like me!

I have been throwing yoyo’s since I was a cub (a very long time ago now). The best places to get yoyo’s is online, you have to wait to get it in the mail, but it’s worth it. The best starter yoyo I can think of is a “YOYOfactory velocity.” With it’s adjustable gap, you will go from up and down to spinning “brain twisters” and “buddah’s revenge” like a pro with some practice. Start out with the sleeper, getting it to sleep for 30-60 seconds and you can do nearly any trick.
Major Tip: But a Yoyo with a ball bearing or some sort of floating axle system. Expect to pay over $7 for anything. The cheepo Duncan ($3) or dollar store Yoyos do NOT work well and you WILL be frustrated. Plan on spending $20 or more and you will be set and hooked for LIFE.
Personally I love the Custom brand Axl or Chain Reactor Yoyos. They are lifetime Yoyos unless someone steals yours…

it all started when we had a program at school for a guy called dazzling dave i bought a yo yo from him a few months later we had to move so we put stuff in storage a litte bit later i was digging around and found it i messed with it for a little bit and i was hooked
You can get a yoyo at a lot of places. The yoyos I have gotten were from wallgreens (those yoyos are not very good) but I got the Duncan Metal Drifter from Toys R Us, and it is a very good and responsive yoyo, and it also sleeps alot longer. I got it for $25.99.
I haven’t tryed it so tomorow I’m gonna get a yo-yo and try it

I dont know much about the yoyo he uses, but the best one I found is the Duncan Metal Drifter. Its for sale at Toys R Us.
Nice he’s pretty good. I learned those tricks earlier and this helped clear them up, especially brain twister. Moving on to stuff like split the atom now. Maybe post video on atomic bomb (barrel rolls) that’d be cool.
They take a bit of practice but get easier after you try them for a bit.
i am a yoyo fanatic who lives in california. i use a yoyofactory northstar, skyline, die nasty, popstar, and genesis. my favorite thing to do is freestyle from white buddah. i will be bridging to boyscouts in a couple months. i like your 3a!

when I saw “100 Books For Boys” I’d think how to train your dragon series would be in there plus dangerous book for boys … oh well. I am looking forward to reading the lord of the rings books, Percy Jackson, the Hobbit and the hardy boys, it seems you never see to many hardy boys books floating around here in this world. I was never interested in reading 39 clues, harry potter and alot more of those old ones listed on here. I definitely think the eragon series should be in this list.
the hobbit and lord of the rings are older than both the 39 clues and harry potter(which, by the way, is very good).

Harry Potter is fine too. I understand your thoughts, myself having a Christian background. Have you read them? Very fun fantasy. Classics are wonderful. Parents need to read or re-read too. I am.
Harry Potter is good and probably will become a classic eventually but right now it’s not old enough.
The later diskworld series have gotten darker and less fun to read. Also my favorites missing from the list were Tripods, Day of the triffids, and Harlon Ellison’s Memos from Pergatory. Overall, a good list.

In response to “The Indian”, I think Harry Potter should be on there. I know a lot of people object to books that contain references to magic, but I don’t really think that you should worry about that with Harry Potter. It is rather dark though.

I have been skating for a while and I can now Ollie, 50-50, and Ollie off a curb. If u need a deck, just ask around for a local skate shop. Once you get there, find a board u like. BUT I warn u- decks are NOT going to cost you at least under a hundred dollars. If you have a board from Target that was $30, u aren’t skating.

guys, when u start dont count on doing an ollie that high because you wont be able to do that for a long while
just got back from a 2 and a half hour sk8 session! wiped out! i love skateboarding, have won 1st place in comps at my skatepark, and i am 10 going up against adults and awesome teens! anyways, everyone keep skating and be consistant to make your way up to the big leagues.

i love fishing. im going to try the shooter. i have a tip to use. next time you chew a piece of gum, save the wrapper, fold it up to where the sun can reflect off of it in the water. put it on your hook, and use the shooter

I was on my way back from big bear today and we played game where you pick a category…we picked famous people.. the point was to say a persons name and the next person has to say another name but that name has to begin with the previous persons last name.. EXAMPLE: I start the game with, Christopher Walken…player b has to name a famous person starting with a W..like, Winona Ryder the next person names a name with the letter R…Reese Witherspoon.. and so on and so forth : )

We play “Roadside Cribbage” where each type of animal (cows, horses, buffalo, deer, birds, etc) have a point value. Your score depends on the animals you pass that are on your side of the road. You count them and figure out your score from there. An example would be: cows are 5 points each and deer are 50 points (they are more rare). You automatically lose all your points if there is a cemetary on your side.
You can’t play i spy in the car because your moving and it would get boring spying stuff inside the car

For every state license plate that you see on a vehicle on the road, try to name the state’s official tree, the state’s official state motto, the state’s official state slogan, the year that the state was accepted into statehood in the United States and the state’s official breed of dog.

Hey how about a game where there is two people and you start at the letter “a” and go on and you are tring to find words out side of the car who have the letter “a”.
When I was little, we played that game. Once, my dad couldn’t find anything that started with J so he made up “Jairplane” LOL…it was so funny. From that day on, we have called airplanes “Jairplanes”.

Or you can play the VW game, when you see a VW you hit someone near you.
What I would do is count how many 18 wheelers you see with/without sleeper cabs. Also if your near train tracks, count those freight cars and locomotives too, and what kind of cars you see. Ex. tanker cars, box cars, scrap metal cars, car carriers, and freight containers, etc. (and rarely cabooses)
How about counting the states of car plates and the one with the most ststes in a certin amount of time wins. All the other games are great for that trip to summer camp.

The movie making tips sounds kind of complicated. I do have a digital camera that takes pictures and records video. Could someone tell how to get better sound on my camera? But I have another problem: when I install the software for the camera on my computer, there is a pop-up saying I need to get administration signed onto my computer. Could somebody tell me what to do?
a digital camera will work fore moviemaking, but I recommend using a camcorder, I no this will work better because I have made many movies bofore.
I don’t know anything about making a movie, and i’m thinking about going to a monument and filming. I’ve been to the grand canyon and filmed on my camera, so I have experence.So can people with more experence than me help me please?
if you wish to make a story based movie it is best to get people together and create a story for your film (along with scripts for your actors). once done filming, edit your film on your computer using editing software (I recommend pinnacle studio 9 or adobe editing softwares).
Oh, and if you wish to make your film a documentary, then do stuff similar to what you have already done,like filming the grand canyon, and just narrate over it. Glad I could help.

If skipping rocks was a professional sport i would be on the alstar team. This lesson of skipping rocks i feal has a few flaws. while i do agree triangular rocks get good amount of skips they are also much harder to throw because of the of the points.see if uthrow a triangle rock at imperfect angle or to hard the three points of the rock are likley to pierce the water which would end up in a bad skip.

I have read many chess books, but the best one that I read wad written for kids. Learning the basics, like these hints, gave me a chance to play longer games and improve.
I know someone before didn’t want to tell but what are the moves that have to happen to win in two moves?
These are great beginner tips, castling is very important and yes, I try to do it before the tenth move (10-15 or so). After so many moves you might have lost the chance to castle and burying your king in your own end where he is covered is safest. The middle of the board is where it hits the fan. just remember that the side pawns are your protection and not to move them away from your king for a while, just until you’ve thinned out the herd a little and also you must keep your pieces covering each other near your king. One opponent piece in there wreaks havoc.

Honestly….. Has anyone every play the computer on level 10 or the highest level and won even once?. I am good and out of 125 games on level 5 I have won 12 I am goning nuts and truely addicted to try and beat it concesntly..but not even close
Green, probably the best way to get better at chess is to 1) study chess books from the library, and 2) keep playing. Experience will help a lot.

I’m glad some of you found the tips helpful! I remember when this article came out a couple years ago–it was a lot of fun to work with the author, Nancy. The graphics were really neat, too.
Castling is a good move! Almost all chess masters and Grandmasters try to castle within the first 15 moves of a game or so. Although the king may look “blocked in” in the corner, it is actually safer there. If castling appears to leave you getting checkmated early, it is probably because not all of your pieces have been mobilized. In the opening, be sure to get ALL your pieces out–don’t waste too much time with the pawns!

I know the two move, the four move, the three move, and many more. Some of the easiest ways to block these involve a knight moving in the opening.
Ok tips for beginners, most of which can be found in a beginning book at the library.
This is not a great feat at all; being good at chess has nothing to do with age. It’s all experience. If a 10 year old that had been playing for 1 week beat a 30 year old that was completely new, I wouldn’t be surprised a bit. Keep in mind, I’m not bashing Jonathon, just pointing out the obvious.
G-dog: Castling is a extremely important part of winning chess. Ask anyone at an intermediate/above level of play.

I agree Joe, These aren’t really great tips. Castling puts your king in a corner so its hard for him to get out of trouble it should only be used if it needs to.

This is a great idea. Philodendren houseplants really like to grow this way. Also potatoes will grow by growing roots in a cup of water. Spider plant hous plants grow tremendous root systems just by growing the house plants in water. Sometimes, house plant food spikes (such as Jobe’s house plant fertilizer food spikes) will dissolve right into the cup of water to provide nourishment to the house plants.

well how do u grow a plant without soil starting from a seed?
you can grow an avocado seed this way at least up until it is about two months old i dont know after that. but it gets roots and starts growing. you will need an avocado seed, toothpicks,and glass of water, you have to stab the seed with three tooth picks spaced evenly around the seeds middle, the toothpicks will hold the seed on top of the cup, next fill the glass with water so that the seed only gets wet for about an inch. after a week you will see results

We used marine treated wood for our raised beds. We also lined the bottoms with 1/2″ mesh stapled to the inside bottom of the boxes to keep moles and voles out.
Pressure treated redwood will last for years and will withstand termites too! Redwood alone is great too:)
Pressure treated wood used for gardening will leach arsenic into soil & plants. Arsenic is used to pressure treat wood. There are other choices like cypress & redwood for example.

The compost and compost tea from the compost barrel works great as the soil for this garden.
You can make this garden smaller in size if you combine it with hydroponic gardening. I used a system like that to get my FFA State Farmer Award Philadelphia.

This reminds me of the Square Foot Gardening method. If you look up that book, go for the revised version called “The All New Square Foot Garden”…or somtihng like that.
We’ve got 4 beds via Square Foot Gardening. Look it up. the soil composition is phenomenal. My son can’t get enough and I love that he’s learning to self-provide.

For a larger scale of this principle check out the book “How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine” from your local Library. If you want to start a VERY productive produce garden in a relatively small area, this is the book to have!!!
another good way to get a bunch of fruit in one area is makeing a tree with branches that produce diffrent fruit. Its done by tieing the end of branches together for a few months and they will all make one tree. My Uncle Planted one of these and it produced apples, pears, and peaches. Real Cool
you can also hang window box flowerpots on the sides with marigolds in them to keep out rabbits and other small critters.
What makes this compact garden so productive is that you will be placing plants close together in squares instead of traditional rows. You can continue to plant as you harvest.

All it takes is hard work…..and you have to believe you can get straight A’s or it wont happen. i used to get A’s and B’s in school but once i started trying hard i got straight a’s every grading period……and i still have lots of funn!!

I’ve gotten straight A’s and my biggest peice of advice to anyone is to get ther priorities staright. I have at a gifted school. I couldn’t handle boy scouts, baseball, and school. I had to quit baseball because I love boy scouts. I was still able to my involved with physical activities.

Make a penny dance on a glass pop bottle.
Choose a realistic F-22 Raptor or a simple Dart-like paper airplane, customize the paint job, add decals and then print it out. Before you know it, you'll be catching big air.
A cub can learn by involvement in the building process, how to use tools, techniques, apply finishes, safety measures etc. I wouldn’t want my son to try using power tools or spraying paints without first knowing how to do it and wear a proper mask. A parents involvement also allows for the interaction to help build something together that he can be proud of and learn from. Isn’t that what the intent of the Derby is?
I wish my car is on this site. I made cheese car with lots of holes and a toy mouse. It is so funny.
These are some really good ideas, but they are WAY too complicated for the cubs to do. Other than that , they are AWSOME designs and extremely creative.

My 11 years old girl scout daughter made the subway sandwich car. She did 95% of the work. She learned by watching me making her brother car. Kids learn from their parent.

This years cars are way better than last years but I think the adults made them with no help from the boys though last years were still really good.

As a Cubmaster, I have to agree. I would rather see less “art” and instead see the smiles of accomplishment on the boys faces when they have there car completed. The PD was never suppose to be about the accomplishment of the parents.
There are maybe 10 of these cars that could possibly meet standard derby regulations and maybe of those, 5-7 were made by actual scouts and not their parents. While the art is lovely, it’s about the boys learning how to compete in a healthy and mature manner and how to work with basic tools to gain basic skills… too much leader involvement here. Never the less….amazing works of art.
you are right because last year I had a pinewood derby race and some cars where pre cut and alot where made by their dads
well i let my parent cut out a basic design then i put stuff on it
(some one else might cut it to)

@sonic I like sonic but i like shadow more… comment is; i like the ones on the yellow shelf and you can tell that it was made by the same people.I like the jet the most.
