Q. I like to go small-boat sailing. I think that it is fun and educational. What kind of boat do you recommend for use on a lake?
Try Churchill Manufactuering. Probably the best Longboard for the money.
i have the tan tien longboard, by loaded. i use reds bearings, paris 180 trucks and flashback wheels it is more on the expensive side but its AMAZING
This is really great information. Where can someone purchase wheels that contain ball bearings in them such as like used in roller skates and roller blades to build a person’s own skate board axle if someone wanted to personally design his or her own skate board for use on skate board rinks and on sidewalks (where expressed permission is given by the local Deparment of Public Works and the person in charge of maintenance and upkeep of sidewalks in a municipality) and other places that are designed for use by skate boards?
Q. Hi Gear Guy, I like skateboarding. I think it is fun. Do you have a skateboard? If you do, is it a longboard or a regular board? I live in Indiana; where could I get an inexpensive longboard? Thanks for your time.
Some knives, if they are old, will not get sharpened. If you have one like that, ask your scoutmaster or a person who knows about knives if they can sharpen your knife for you. If they can’t, or if they do and it’s still dull, then it is time to get a new knife.
One other thing you might be able to use would be a file you would use to sharpen
an axe, I wouldn’t recomend it though. The wetstone probably be the best choise, if
you are going to bring one when you are going on a trip, like canoeing in the boundry waters, you should find a smaller sized wetstone that will much more easily fit imto your
pocket. There ate a sot of ways to sharpen your knife. The wetstone would be the best.
We just purchased an Ozitech Furi Diamond Fingers Sharpener. Really neat device. Folds up. Worth the price. Easy to use. Thanks Gear Guy!
Smith’s Edge Pro is only $15 and has Ceramic for the fine stone and carbide for the coarse and it can sharpen serrated edges with the Ceramic
You can flip over a ceramic coffee mug and sharpen your knife on the circular ring of exposed ceramic, it works great but it will take a little longer to sharpen your knife. Also if you roll down a car window or any kind of glass (be carefull) you can sharpen you knife on the edge of the glass.
The ceramic coffee mug and glass ideas are pretty clever. Good to know in an emergency.
Is there any specific model? A quick Google shows dozens of types for all three, and I have no idea which are good or bad. Any help?
Sandpaper works just fine. Lower grit to just do a basic sharpening, higher grit to make that blade sharp.
ARE YOU CRAZY! sandpaper is a bad choice! sandpaper is basically a sheet of paper with a ton of small rocks glued to it . And rocks my friend, are a knives worst enemy.
Sandpaper covers a lot of stuff. I use the same crocus cloth and emery paper I would use to polish a piece of metal. You can glue a few pieces to wood and pack them along. PLUS what do you think a whetstone is if NOT stone? I have sharpened a knife with a picked up piece of sandstone. Works.
Try a small diamond steel, low cost and work great. You can even get a pen size steel that will fit in your shirt pocket. Mine also has a groove in it to sharpen fish hooks. Cost about $10.00.
Q. Hey Gear Guy, which devices (other than a traditional whetstone) can I use to sharpen my knife? How well do they work?
Q. I'd like to buy a mountain skateboard. What kind of board would you recommend for me?
Finally, there's a global positioning system receiver with a bright, full-color screen and an affordable price tag.
Philmont requires we stuff the tents into their tent bags. Folding causes creases which causes leaks.
Make sure you washyour tent after each camping tent. Made sure your tent is stored in
a dry place. Remember to put the rain fly and the tarp up when you set up your tent. Make sure you clear out the area where the tent is going to be. To prevent other people from falling, on the sides where the rop or poles meet the ground. get a noodle for swimming, slpit part of the noodle to the midle, then put the noodle their. Theese should help your tent last longer.
You should make sure you keep your tent in a dry place. After each camping trip you
should set up your temt and clean it. The rest of the advice I know when it comes to
that is be careful around the tent.
Newer tents have zipper covers-so as long as you store it dry there should be no problem. on older tents with exposed zippers I use a bar of natural soap, such as ivory to coat zipper, seems to work well. Also when someone gets a new tent I set it up, soak it with a hose(outside only), let it air dry and then waterproof it, haven’t had a leak yet.
Nothing ruins a tent faster that someone yanking on a zipper too fast. Zip slow and your tent will treat you right. Another common problem is a scout opening part of a door and then pushing through the hole rather than opening the door wide open. Watch sometime and you’ll see it; more often than you think.
When I get home, after natural air drying my tent, I like to turn my tent inside-out and put it in the electric dryer for 15 minutes to freshen it up a bit. DO NOT USE HEAT SETTING on dryer, only the COOL or FLUFF mode. Things like bugs, grass, and dirt end up in the lint screen. I do the same with my down sleeping bag.
That is just a plain good thing to do, That way you won’t be sleeping in dirt.
Great thinking. That’s what l did too. I still have a large canvas 4 man tent that l bought used in 1982. Keeping a tarp over and under the tent will.make them last for years on.
I think I read somewhere that you should clean them by scrubbing the teeth and the zipper itself with an old toothbrush.
Q. Hello Gear Guy, I just got a new tent. What can I do to make sure it lasts me the longest amount of time possible?
in all the winter outings that I have been on, my camo coat works great
at target there is under aurmor under the c9 brand and i think it is better
you can find them at thrift stores, and wall mart sometimes, at target they have the c9 brand witch is under armor but thicker and warmer
Q. Dear Gear Guy, I’m going on a Bluenose camping trip and was having trouble finding the right gear. What are some good brands for warm clothes that are also affordable?
They wouldn’t let us use the music parts-no electronics at camp.
Sound like a Nightmare for that one scout who is trying to sleep on the camps. But over all it would be fun to have.
If you and your buddies have ever dreamed of turning your tent into a disco, this is exactly what you need!
Q. What's the best and easiest way to tie something down? My dad is always showing me different knots, but they are so hard I can never remember them.
when you pack away your batteries for your stuff you can sometimes forget like I did at my last campout. make sure that you have everything before you go.
If you have aquired lots of equipment: once it’s cleaned and dried try storing your equipment in labled totes. This will keep things from getting lost and dusty if stored in a garage.
Q. How do I properly store and care for my camping equipment?
if you must choose; for a scout, think of it this way ….. a backpack can always be used on an outing but a duffel bag can not. Simple enough?
A duffel is great for cabin or car camping. A backpack is for hiking. Backpacks take more room in the car and are not needed to move gear around after you are set up on site. With a good duffel all your stuff can go in one bag and you can hang it off a bunkbed or nail.
I’d also say a backpack would be better to camp with
OK you use your duffel bag and try to hike where I hike! You’ll be crying for a backpack!
Q. Which is better for camping, a duffel or a backpack?
Might want to add getting it check out by doctor once you’re home.
Q. We were on day two of a six-day backpacking trip when my buddy badly sliced the tip of his finger. The injury probably needed stitches, but we were a two-day walk from the trailhead. I know we were supposed to be prepared, and we got him bandaged up pretty well, but I know we could have done more. What, Gear Guy, would you have done?
Never seen one. Looks like I would suffocate in one of those things.
Ya..ill definatly walk around scout canp with that
that’s funny i can’t imagine anyone wearing that willingly
me too just too silly and what if a stisk tears it or it gets wet while wearing it
Hmmm, used to call those Snowmobile Suits. Weren’t that warm when you stopped moving.
So, I’m gonna say no, and still use my 1970′s down bag and a blanket.
dont think it will be useful because how do u unzip ur self while being trapped in that bag
i agree with hailstorm it may seem comfortable at first but then summer comes and your super hot.
Just use a normal sleeping bag in the summer, that easy.
seems pretty handy for winter camping but not for summer camping
Q. I’ve heard of sleeping bags that have arms and legs, so you can move around in them. Are these bags worth it?
Q. I am a Scout from New Zealand, and we struggle with keeping our Scout group’s canvas tents waterproof — they are pretty old. How can we make them waterproof?
Looks like you’ve satisfied another mother’s need to adequately equip her Cub with great stuff! Well done….
Q. Hi Mr. Gear Guy. I saw a sleeping bag in Boys’ Life. It is called Cub Scout lightweight bag and says Cub Scouts on the actual sleeping bag. Where can I purchase that bag? Thanks!
No!
If you have any questions about staying warm at night, pack warmer than you other wise might. Nothing gets a scout to quit camping faster than a bad sleeping experiance like being cold every night.
You could also put your sleeping bag, in another sleeping bag.
Q. I have a 45-degree Lafuma mummy sleeping bag and a 15-degree liner to go with it, so it becomes a 30-degree bag. My dad says I’ll be fine in the cold, but I’m not so sure. It gets pretty cold in the tri-state area. What do you think I should do?
I got my lock back knife at a scout store and it has rubber handle for good grip.
your problem is you’ve got a cheap knife. you need to go out and buy your self a good knife (preferable a sheath knife then you wont have trouble with it closing) you will spend about $30 but if you take carry of it you will only spend it once. and you will save money in the long run.
I just bought an Opinel #7 carbon steel knife and am loving it. It’s not your traditional lockback. The locking mechanism twists around the top of the handle and blade to lock it into place. Very easy to use. There’s a stainless steel version as well, but I like a sharp, safe knife, and went with carbon steel instead.
Take a peek at a “Peck” brand knife. Very good single blade lock blade for about $24.00.
Gerber LMF fixed blade for heavy duty work. I used it wile in Iraq and it never failed me.
I got my knife at a surplus store. Had it for 2 years and it still works like a charm. It was only 25 dollars too.
A great knife that I have had for a while is the Gerber EVO. It is a great locking knife. It keeps a edge very well and I have dropped it numerous times and all it has to show are a couple scratches. Good luck!!
I have the EVO jr. I found it on a hike and I cleaned it up and now it is my number 2 knife.
i have had a kershaw vapor 1 for several years now it has a 2.5 in. blade and i like it for about 25 dollars
Your lock axial is probably broken. most likely dew to cheap manufacturering. Allow me to suggest either a good Gerber, or Buck lock back (Like the Buck 110 hunter or the Quick Fire) or you may want a good short fixed blade (KA-bar BK2 Champion) check out amazon.com or ebay for a good cheap price. Glad to help!
Q. When I get a new traditional lock-blade knife, it often messes up within the first hour. When I close it, the blade flips in and out and will not completely shut. Why isn’t it working?
These are truely great cases. If you put a little grease around the seal it becomes even more water proof. if it’s raining, you can run your gps in the case and read the screen through the clear cover.
I have the 1010 micro case series and I love it!
As high-tech gadgets like smart phones, digital cameras, and GPS devices continue to find their way into the outdoors, we have to find ways to protect them. One of the best, and most affordable options is the Pelican 1020 Micro Case.
Q. I have been reading Boys’ Life longer than most Scouts, but I saw the question about “I have a 20 degree bag…but still cold.” His problem might be that he is going to bed in the clothes that he has been wearing all day. Your body sweats, even in the coldest weather, and that moisture will keep you cold even in the warmest sleeping bag. My advice is to change into fresh dry clothes, at a minimum, change into dry socks and long johns. Try it. Dry means warm.
I think it depends on if you ever (or like to) go mountain biking ,also, you should get a mountain bike but if you don’t ever really mountain bike and you don’t want to be bouncing around you might want to look into getting a lite weight mountain bike would probably be great. So making a long story short, get a mountain bike.
I’m all for mountain but the good gear can get really expensive. I gust bought a new suspension system and the cheapest one with good quality was about $300.
p.s. don’t get one of those cheap bikes from wal-mart they have bad quality and never last. Go to a store that specialises in high quality bikes
You can buy two way tires for your mountain bike; great for road and trail.they are smooth in the middle and knobby on the sides. They do cost about $40.00 for a set, but it’s cheaper than two bikes.
Q. Should I get a mountain bike or a road bike? Where I live the roads are bad and uneven and have potholes. I would prefer a mountain bike but I do go on casual, medium cycles and I like to go fast enough. Which one should I get?
I used under Armour when I served as at Para-rescue man in Iraq. not only does it keep you warm but it keeps you cool as well! the under armor worked great and I still use it today.
Under Armour is good but if you are looking for a higher quality but expensive base layer some of the Icebreaker brand are v. good.
Polartec is made in the USA…keep your country employed!
under armor is great but that does not mean that other brands are bad!
Q. Hello Gear Guy, My friends wear Under Armour with shorts and a T-shirt and say they are warm when it is 30 degrees out. Meanwhile I’m freezing with long johns and my uniform and a jacket on! I was considering buying Under Armour. They give me a choice of silk or polyester, which one keeps me warmer? Do you have suggestions of any other products besides Under Armour?
These shorts are like short shorts from the 80s on my tall boys. Any suggestions for convertable shorts in the correct color for taller boys?
White Sierra makes a good, nylon, youth convertible pant. You can get them online at Campmor for around $25. Other online stores sell them as well, but usually for $10 more. The color you want is New Sage. They must be popular because they often sell out, but so far they’ve been replenished with each new season (I’ve bought them three years in a row.)
Scout pants are nice, but if you want compact conversion pants our guys buy “Zip offs” at Dunham sports. They cost about $12.00 and compact down to 1/3 the scout pants size (They are light weight material). They also come in many colors: scout green, black, cream, blue and tan. As an ultra lite camper, these are all I use in the summer months in the BWCA. They also have a draw rope so no belt.
Q. I can't seem to find a good pair of convertible synthetic pants for hiking/backpacking. Could you point me to where I should look? I'm looking for something that doesn't cost more than $45 to $50.
I bot this and the pankakes took forever to cook
Interesting idea. This might be fun for summer camp cooking; I’m sure the chocolate will be popular.
This is the stuff I keep looking for, new and different, keep adding more items to the site like this.
If you love pancakes as much as Gear Guy does, then you'll love Batter Blaster, the easiest pancake option we've ever used for camp cooking.
Base your assumptions on the heavier of the two when asking what it’ll weigh, that way if it’s lighter than that …. bonus.
i dont know, i know the one i got had only one weight (11.74)
Q. I'm shopping for a tent and am confused by the way the tents are labeled for weight. Most seem to list two weights, a trail weight and a packed weight. What's the difference?
THE countour is about $200 depending on wich model you get
SAVE UP AND YOU WILL GET ONE
I NEED ONE REALBAD DO YOU NOW A PLACE THAT I COULD GET ONE
you will surely ending up paying alot of money though that is why my friend duct tapes his 20 dollar camera with a 30 gb sd card to his helmet in stead of the 300 dollar option of the nice go pros i would suggest something more scetchy that will get the job done just as well unless you have the money then go ahead
GoPro also gives away one of everything they make daily, enter and you could win!
Q. I need (OK, I want) a helmet camera. I like the GoPros but I don't know which model to get for filming while skiing. What would you recommend?
We’re going there this year and carrying Kelty Comanche 4400 ci packs. Same weight but has a lot more compartments to organize with as well a external latching loops and straps . $139.00 at gander mountain.
Q. How are the camping backpacks at Philmont made so lightweight?
That’s a fine idea and all, but most of the time when you’re hiking or boating or whatever, you have either a storage trailer, boat trailer, bike rack, or whatever that will have already been in the hitch. This already occupies the hitch, so the ball for a trailer doesn’t have anywhere to go. May all your stuff fit in the truck.
HitchSafe attaches to any standard 2-inch receiver hitch on a truck, van or SUV and provides a small storage space locked securely by a combination of your choosing.
If it’s real cold out, I place a long piece of cardboard on the ground and then my closed cell pad on top of it followed by an old comforter cut down to size and then my bag on top. This eliminates 90% of my heat loss. Add a hat and socks and you’re set. When in the snow, a quinzee will keep you warm compared to a tent or under the stars.
The reflective sheet is a good idler BUT use it underneath you between you and the air mattress that is where your heat loss is, if you have an extra bag unzip it and use it as a quilt over you.
I use a ski mask/hat, two layers of loose long underwear, disposable hand-warmers, and I lay a fleece blanket/liner over my sleeping bag (like a regular blanket).
One thing that works for me are the reflective space blankets. Buy one, cut it in half, and use it on top of you in your sleeping/mummy bag. This works especially well when you throw one of those disposable 6 hour hand warmers under there too. If that doesn’t work, I’ve doubled up on sleeping bags. Bring a 20 or 0 degree then a 40 or 50 degree and stick one inside the other. Hope this helps!
I have read all the comments above and they all work. I change my clothes, put on a stocking cap and open a package of hand warmers if it is below freezing.
I have had good luck heating water before bed and putting it in a water bottle. I make sure it is one that I know doesn’t leak (Nalgene works for me). Put the bottle in a sock, then once in my sleeping bag put the bottle between my legs or at my feet. I stay warm all night and I have warm water in the morning to drink.
My Star scout changes his socks to really thick wool ones, changes into fleece sleeping pants and uses a face mask hat to sleep in. My husband (an ASM) will use 2 layers of face masks to stay warm in addition to thermal underwear under the fleece. They do winter camping down to 10 degrees in January here in CT and are very comfortable.
make sure your bladder is emptied out because when its full you loose 3 degrees
Best advice I ever got… Change into clean dry underwear & socks just before going to bed!
You also want to make sure you are hydrated and fed before bed so your body can regulate its own temperature. Hope this helps.
I tend to have this problem alot so i now bring a stocking cap, extra blanket, and before i go to sleep i put colthing that is still warm in my bag (after i checked for ticks and other un-wanted bugs or debris)
Q. I have a 20-degree-rated sleeping bag that I use with a fleece liner, but in late fall and early winter, I'm still cold. I've tried everything -- what should I do?
Looks Good but you never said how much battery life it has because you only said how much the map has
Sometimes when you're backpacking, the last thing you need is something else to carry. So leave the bulky hand-held global positioning system unit at home and take along the Foretrex 301.
any sporting good store worth its salt sells tent pole repair kits they are pretty cheap and come with shock cord extra fiber glass poles and the metal end caps.but if your on the trail and dont have the kit duct tape is wonderfull.
Depending on how your pole is broken you might even be able to repair it using the same material you’d use to fix a fiberglass fishing pole..
Q. Yo Gear Guy! This weekend when I was setting up my two-man tent to air-dry, one of the fiberglass poles broke. Any places that I could go to get a replacement?

get either a butterfly or a sunfish, Sunfish are smaller and simpler for beginers, butterflies are bigger and much faster. A good sunfish is about $500 and a good Butterfly is about $750
Where can you get the boats for a cheaper price in Dallas Texas.
