From helmets to boots, the Gear Guy fills you in on everything you need to know to suit up and shred the slopes.
This list is very helpful for any beginning climber. It has great tips, and great merchandise recommendations.
Timberland’s are great and very universal because they are very light in weight.
Oakley “HellBound” Para-boots are what I used and they saved my feet on more then one occasion.
Wow I wish I had enough money that I could waist it on boots too. Anyways I have a really nice pair of Timberlands now. why spend $600 on boots when you can get a perfectly good pair for a few bucks?? sounds like overkill to me.
I bought a Pair of Steel toe Combats at my friendly neighborhood Military Surplus store , if you have a big foot ( Im size 10 and a half) then go to a surplus store , i got these for like 20$ and wore then for 3 years and they still fit.
I just bought a pair of Timberland woodland boots that weigh about the same as my tennies; very nice. Cost was $90.00. Just a suggestion.
I love sports, I love nature, I love the Vibram Five Fingers!
I was looking for combat boots, ya know jungle or military style.
I hope you have a lot of $$$ because combat boots cost up to $700!! the cheapest I have found them is $400! good luck with that!
I think that they look pretty cool. The first one from Cabela’s have great quality.
THEY LOOK HORABLE. I/M ONLY TEN I COULDNT EVEN FIT IN THEM
A few years ago I’d have to pay someone for this informaotin.
Here are eight cool-looking boots that are comfortable and sturdy enough to tackle long days on tough trails.
I go with a Bota water bottle. It has a removable built in filter. And is only 20$. Plus it filters 600 gals before you have to replace it!
A better rule of thumb for proper hydration when hiking is half your body weight in ounces and if you are over exerting yourself double that!
For our unit, boiling water remains the number one process for purifying water; it’s cheap and easy. When time is of essence, we use the stri-pen for clear water (No, batteries wearing out have never been a problem) & for non-clear water we use the Katadyn guide pump, it’s faster than most others and cost the same for replacing filters. My suggestion is try numerous methods and pick those best for you. Always carry a backup, just in case.
I’ve used First Need for years; will screw on standard water bottles/water bags. Has a pre-filter, pumps quite fast, and can be field cleaned(reverse hose and you can backwash filter). It has a small bottle of dye which you put into a pot, pump, and if the water shows any sign of bluish/purple dye, it’s time to change filter. Never had a problem with them, and have had three of them. Newest one is very easy to use and pumps quite fast. Can’t go wrong! Camprdon
sounds really cool how much does it cost and how many gals does it filter?
Learn the ins and outs of water treatment gear to help you stay healthy and hydrated on the trail.
If you really like a pillow, try an inflaitable one. I bought 3 at Wal-Mart about 4 years ago and take one on my backpacking trips simply because they pack so small, so why not. It can inflate from 1/2 – 3″ high and 17′ long. It has 1″ of open cell foam build into the fleece pillow case for extra comfort. I found them on sale for $4.00 each. I used to use a large ziplock 1/2 filled with air and wrape my fleece jacket around it; the air pillow is more solid and less noisy. I don’t roll up my clothes as a pillow because either they’re dirty and smell or I’ll sweat on my clean clothes making them dirty before I wear them.
You’ll need to cut an X in a tennis ball and put one over each leg/foot of your cot or you will poke a hole in the bottom of your tent. Or get a cot that has a continuous length of tubing across the bottom where it touches the floor.
Good idea! the legs of my cot are too big for that so i put socks on them.
My vote goes to the Thermarest NeoAir. It’s nice packing my pad away in my bag rather than strapped to my gear loops on the outside.
Never ever use pillows…They weigh you down on backpacking trips and they can be replaced easily with a bundled up sweatshirt. Most also become obsolete when wet.
I agree with the pillows except I have a bad neck so I use a total pillow in my hammockthe small total pillow is tiny it can support my neck and I have a water proof case for it.
if you have an inflatable sleeping pad, just stick sum thing underneath the head part to prop it up a bit. that way, you don’t need to bring a pillow and your head is propped up.
Isn’t this the same guy that couldn’t have a 4 ounce compass on his watch because it “was to heavy”?
I have one of those Sea To Summit sleeping bag liners. I take it on short summer skiing and mountaineering trips when there is still snow on the peaks. It turns my 30 degree bag into a fifteen degree bag! my liner works great!
I use the awesome Term-a-Rest Trail lite pad. I use the small. Although, it doesn’t cover you completly, it still is great and keeps me warm. It is really lightweight too!
I use a exersize mat from wal-mart its cheap, light, and really comfortable. It came with its own strap so i just hook it to my pack. It works great!
The Slumberjack Super Guide 30 degree sleeping bag is awesome.
I use a Big Agnes Air Core sleeping pad. The pad is full length, with 2.5 inches of thickness. It’s great for backpacking because it weighs only 22 ounces and packs down to the size of a Nalgene bottle!
thermarest is the best for there sleeping pads and pillows
I like LL Bean all the way for this kind of thing!
I found a sleepin ba that keeps you warm to temperatures down to -57 Degrees. It is in the $50 to $100 range.
Is there a specific link to the 100th anniversary slleping bag? I am having trouble finding it.
Try the Cocoon Airsore Pillow instead. It weights 2 ounces and takes up barely any room.
It is very helpful to now how I can buy all the stuff I need.
i have found that a sleeping pad is very important for cold weather
Get a good night sleep on your next camp out with the Gear Guy's handy guide to sleeping pads, bag liners, pillows and cots.
A third option is aqua socks. They are light weight latex shoes with rubber soles. Great for canoeing and beach-wear. Average cost is $12.00-$16.00. They are perfect for swimming in rocky areas that might hurt your feet.
I have the best kind of sandals, its called calluses!! I walk around bare foot a lot (not during the winter of course!)and after a wile you wont even feel the sand and rocks under you feet!
I love sports, I love nature, I love the Vibram Five Fingers!
I have a pair of source sandals and I love them. I do a lot of water hiking and they are very durable and supportive.
the lightest hicking shoes i ever got was at marties
If the hiking isn’t too heavy of strenuous, try Vibram Five Fingers. they look weird and take a little getting used to, but are extremely light and comfortable.
Sandals like the Treksta Kisatchie sandal are great!, but you don’t
need to pay thet kind of money for them. Sketchers, and Faded Glory
make the same type of sandal, only for 16, to 35 bucks!
I used them, and their just as good as anything!
I think that the Treksta sandals look cool, but I wonder if they come in other colors than blue. They also seem kind of expensive for sandals.
I’m just saying
Keen makes some good sandals. Crocs are also good in water sports (boating, summer fishing, etc.) I’m not sure that I would take sandals on a light hike though, that just doesn’t seem very smart.
I gots me some manly steel-toe boots for that!
i had hicking boots with steal toe boots and when i grew out of them they cut, brused my feet, and was just plain un comferble so enless you are finished growing in your feet then get regular boots or for the summer hicking shoes are the way to go and you can get at marties for 80 $
Sometimes hiking boots are overkill. Here's how to buy sports sandals and light hikers.
Our patrol just got 4 all new GSI Glacier cook sets, WOW. Nice and easy to clean.
Mountain House meals require only a pot to boil water and a spoon or fork.
Have you priced these out though? At $7-$10 a meal, what scout could afford a 6 day hike paying these prices? You’re talking $120-$180 for an outing per scout. Ouch!
This topic seems to be the hardest for my new scouts to figure out. Through use, we have found the scout mess kit inaddiquite, it crimps in packs and the handle of the small pot tends to not be centered so items tip out and the pan handel can’t hold any real weight like hamburger w/o bending. Most of our scouts still wanting a mess kit use a military kit made of steel; they’re read good and often cheaper. Our older boys use Orikasu foldable meal kits. They lay flat in a back-pack, weigh almost nothing and clean real easy with a drop of camp suds. (I’ve had mine for 4 years now) For pots we carry the GSI 4 piece kit. They too clean up real easy and can handle campfire cooking. For messy cooking where pot cleaning might not be easy, we carry #10 food cans w/ bail wire attached for handles; once used, cut the bottom off, flatten and dispose of when possible. Since its been recycled, it’s also a green concept.
For silverware the light my fire unit gets an A+. We did break one once but the scout was at fault.
As always, try several items and then choose what’s best for you.
If you are camping in a stationary place, and not hiking or backpacking, cast iron cookware is the way to go. The initial investment you make will last you more than a lifetime, is nonstick and versatile.
WARNING!!! STAY AWAY FROM ALL TETHLON COOKWEAR BECAUSE OVERHEATED TETHLON CAN BE POISONUS!!!PLEASE RESEARCH THIS (BUT NOT FROM CAMPING COMPANYS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONES SELLING THEM!)
STAY WITH STAINLESS OR TITANIUM.
I love the GSI Pinnacle Soloist cookset. It is great for backpacking because it is so light and small, but it is just as tough as other base camp cookware. You can fit a small canister stove (and canister) in it. The lid is great because it has a strainer built into it, and it fits the small bowl/cup that the cookset comes with. And the stuff sack doubles as a washbasin.
stay away from allumiun it absorbs tatse and doesnt handle high heat well
fozzils are wishful thinking. ask anybody that owns them and they will tell you that you cant ever get oil or grease off them.
but thats cool if your a vegetarian
I’m not one
Mountain House and Backpacker’s Pantry have lots of meals that are very easy to cook, and are great for backpacking as well as regular camping.
If you have your own cookset, make sure you have some stuff to help with cleanup when you use them. A roll of paper towels, a steel wool scrubbie, and a dry cloth in a plastic baggie works well.
By the way, the steel wool scrubbie can be an emergency fire starter if you have a battery!
A Light My Fire spork is very good for any form of camping. I have ran mine over with a semi and it didn’t get a scratch!!!!!
great article, I carry a spoon, small pot, small titanium tea pot, Tupperware bowl with lid and a plastic mug. sometimes a Frisbee for a plate if more then myself will be eating out of my pot.
Military mess-kits are very good for your personal eating kit. You can find them at any army-navy surplus store. They are very cheap and very durable. If you could use it in war, I think it can survive us boy scouts!!!!
the light my fire mess kit is the best its light durable and has everthing you need and is way better than the bsa metel one
The Cub Scout and Boy Scout aluminum Mess kit doesn’t require alot of room in the back pack, is durable enough to be cleaned using steel wool and hand wash dishwashing liquid, and may be adapted to itself to create a small single serving soup kettle, an aluminum skillet to fry sunfish and small carp on, and has a folding eight ounce aluminum drinking cup. The mess kit is a great item to cook with. All that is lacking from a complete backpacking kitchen are a quilted hot dish cloth to prevent burns from holding an aluminum skillet over a lit campfire and a backpacker’s cast iron skillet used to cook food and scare away wildlife who may be interested in whatever a person is preparing for a meal.
Eat like a trail gourmet (or at least like a Philmont veteran!). Here are tricks and tips for picking the right pots, pans and utensils.
i love riding my bike down this dirt road called wild acer with my friends
Specialized is pretty good. Most of my friends mountain bike, and we all love our Specializeds.
theres a perfect road bike that doesn’t cost a lot=the GMC Denali (yes its named after a car) $200 + shipping off amazon.
bike expert-hunts 160 is wrong my mongoose X75 is awesome i have crashed it 2 or 3 times because i was not paying attention and its still an awesome ride, pretty smooth to. i heard that garry fisher wheel grooves were wearing off because the brakes made the bike come to a screeching halt which wears off the grooves. i forget which bike it was though.
You need to look at how it works and what type of bike it is.
i forgot to mention that its a redline bmx even though i dont do tricks
Huffy brand bikes hold up really long. I have 1 that I’ve had for about 2-4 years & it still works good.
i bought a mongoose xr75 and ive had it 4 2 years ITS AWESOME:):):)
I got a Diamondback Cobra 24 It still works great after riding it alot, doing tricks, and some minor crashes.
I like mongoose. Avigo bikes are bad, the brakes do not work!!!!!
I have a specialized stump-jumper way too much but it was worth it
Mongoose is one of the lowest quality of bike no offense. The highest qualitybike brands are Trek, Gary Fisher, and Giant as far as can remember. So if you want a quality bike get one of those.
Bike expert-Hunts160 is right I got a mongoose and it has been such a pain! It’s loaded with all the cheapest parts and that makes it no fun to ride.
Sorry to say you are wrong. If you get a real mongoose the are great bikes. Btw you will never find a real mongoose at walmart target or any store like that. Google them to see their real bikes.
Bentrider online is an online magazine dedicated to recumbents. Good articles and tech advice.
The last three bikes from the bottom are NOT MOUNTAIN BIKES!!!! those are trick and street bikes, they aren’t meant for mountain biking. Real mountain bikes have multiple gears, brakes, and special features meant for the hills.
I found a good specialized hardrock sport that I’m getting for Christmas.
I’ve got one of those, and I love it. None of the rest of my family is into biking, so I am often left to find my own trails. It’s great on the trail and pretty good on the road.
helped me pick out a bike ive been using for years.
If you are going to get a bike, get a TREK. They are kinda expensive, but they are precision on wheels
How good are Mongoose bikes? Are really reliable and durable? I am thinking of getting a Mongoose at Walmart for $120 or $130.
DO NOT GET ANY BIKE AT WAL-MART! They some of the worst bikes in terms of quality and durability. I suggest REI. Any place that only sells bikes or has a specific department of bikes (with a lot of bikes in the department). It’d be best if you got it new too.
Oh and don’t get a mongoose . See my comment close to the top of the list.
I would not get a bike at Wal-Mart or REI instead I would get a bike at used bike shops usually each town has one.
I would not suggest buying from any department store, even REI. You should go to a bike shop that hav knowlageable staff for all your bikes and gear needs.
they ride comfortably but aren’t durable they would last about 1 to 2 years.
I am buying a bike and this helped me persuade my mom to not get a department store bike. My grandmother asked a guy at a department store,”What type of bike is most popular for kids.” He said a BMX bike. But thats not what I wanted. I wanted a mountain bike.
Perfect information on helping me with my next bike.
Michael T.
–I love MathSecret!
Pro mountain biker Graham Agassiz give you all the advice you need to shop for your next bike.
Sleep all day and play all night and you’ll never get burned, but your mom might get mad.
also use a nice light hat. it will definitly keep the sun out ur eyes but also catches sweat!
sun screen! i always make sure i have some on at summer camp. keep ur body safe!!!
Where do you get swim mask to protect against sun?
what about the “sun mask” convertible cover for the face? It is getting very popular with outdoorsmen because of the comfort and efficiency in blocking UV rays. It comes in several cool colors and designs. About $20-25.
Two words for you, “banana-boat!…..is NOT what you want!!!!!”
What you want is Coppertone Sport brand. I recommend the 70 SPF.
Get a military boonie hat, they work great, and will keep your head protected from the sun and rain. Find them at any army-navy surplus store.
I think that these are reallly good tips so don’t make fun of them, especially if you use this in the future.
WEAR SUNSCREEN!!!!Believe me!I had 2nd degree sunburn a few days ago!IT HURT!
I recommend either coppertone sport spray or bullfrog spray
Tuck a neckerchief, bandanna, or spare t-shirt under your cap if you don’t have a fancy hat with a built-in neck flap. Gloves are also a good idea – batting gloves have great grip for paddle sports. Consider water shoes or neoprene booties if you’ll be on the water for a while, its reflective surface can really burn your feet. Definitely wear polarized sunglasses, and use a strap if they might fall off or get lost.
Wearing thin, long sleeved white or tan linen or cotton shirt and pants is cooler than a t-shirt and shorts on a sunny day, and you protect your skin.
what is the right first aid kit for me. im a boyscout working on first class
Zinc Oxide will prevent sunburn. If sunburn does occurr, aloe vera will soothe the sting of a reddened sunburn. If a person’s sunburn is so severe as to turn a person’s skin purple-blue, only a physician can suggest a product to treat a purple-blue sunburn.
i already have a tan, how can i keep from getting skin cancer and burn
Be prepared for those broiling summer days with these handy tips and hot gear.
off topic but what are those backpack solar energy things and are they worth buying and how much money and do they have ones with different plugs to charge diffdrent things.
Try thrift shopping.. I bought a perfict size packpack for just 5 bucks and now I’m glad I did. The pack has no bells and whistles but it gets the job done!!
I bought a pack at Sams Club auction for 20 bucks, swiss gear really nice back pack with all the bells and whistles.
i have a 48 liter backpack from an army surplus shop for under 50 bucks water proof and very durable
This may sound odd, but I highly recommend a pack without a frame.
They may not have as much room as one with a frame, but they are loads more comfortable, and the
packs them selfs are lighter too!
Never buy a backpack over the internet! If you are going to get a pack, try to find a store and try it out. Some outdoor stores have a specialist to help you choose a pack, without trying to advertise to you. Those guys can help you find the right pack that fits you and how you are going to pack. If you can, ask if they have a weight or something and put it in the pack, then walk around in the store, try it out!
I have two packs for different backpacking. For scouting trips I use a Teton Sports Scout 3400 cu. in. It is good for the simple 2 to 4 day trips. For longer trips, I use a Deuter 5500 cu. in. pack I bought from the NOLS base in Lander, WY. Both packs are great for packing and cheap. The Teton Sports pack I bought from Sportsman’s Warehouse for $50!!! It’s not hard to find a good pack at a reasonable price.
especially from good ol’ Teton!
maybe be so but they are unconformable and if you pack only what is needed then room is not really a problem. Try making a list on your next backpack. Whatever you do not use check of and do not bring it again(of course things like first aid kits and other 10 essentials should still go). Also only carry as much food as you are going to eat, if you have too much food left after the trip cut down on the amount you bring.
kelty yukon 2900 is graet it even has a sleeing bagcompertment
I used a Gregory Palisade (5300) when I went to Philmont a few years ago. I never had any trouble with the pack and always had space for troop and personal gear.
For a young scout you cant go wrong with a Jansport Scout. I recieved one when I was in Cub Scouts and used in for several years. The pack is ajustable and a great pack for youth who are just starting out in the sport. Usually you can always find them on sale at stores like Campmor or REI. Moreover, I always hear good things about the Kelty Yukon.
Loading a pack with the heavier items near the bottom and lighter items near the top also makes the mpack easier to carry and control. This is true of both internal and external framed packs. Many packs have a sleeping bag compartment at the bottom of the pack, but if your tent is heavier than your sleeping bag it make sense to carry it nearer the bottom of the pack. Heavy items such as stoves and fuel will also help move the load downward to your hips and take some pressure off of your shoulders. Water is arguably the heaviest item you will carry at nearly eight pounds per gallon. Packs with hydration compartments make sense, and the constant ability to drink as you walk can save you from dehydration. The most important point about pack size, as pointed out is that it should fit properly, then considerations about the length of the trip and time on the trail should be taken into consideration. I enjoyed reading the posted comments.
Are Canvas Backpacks built more durable than nylon backpacks? Will Canvas Backpacks withstand the weather and terrain more than nylon backpacks? During our visit to Philmont, my crew decided to earn the 50 miler afoot and afloat award so that our backpacks need to withstand water as well as dry heat of Philmont. Thank you for your input regarding canvas backpacks versus nylon backpacks.
i think u need a backpack in the 5000 cubic in for a week backpacking trip. not a 2000 cubic in . i personal use the osprey argon 85 and it works great
i used 2 carry 2 much much gear and fell a few times so i say ONLY!!!!!!!! the most important gear and chance is u wont use most of the extra stuff anyway so pack light!!!
should high adventure camping trips have more advanced backpaks than other scouts
The Osprey Kestrel comes in the small/medium size. Do you know what the suggested torso size is and what ages would this pack normally be for?
is the rei meteor pack waterproof or does it come with a rain fly
The tent in the article was the MSR Trekker Tent.
If anyone wants my opinion:
External backpacks are the way to go. there cheap. There sturdy. They also can easily have a sleeping bag just dangle off a bar.
definitely i agree, external packs are the way to go for 90% of scouts. but when i went on a backpacking trip in the adirondacks, i found that my external frame pack constantly shifted left and right on the rugged trails, and the frame sometimes caught on low-hanging branches (a common occurrence in the adirondacks), so in conditions like those an internal frame pack would be more appropriate.
skip the external and get an internal, when bushwhacking it is much easier to get through dense brush the pack protects everything inside of it, and you don’t have to deal with strapping your gear on and don’t have to worry about the gear falling off.
yeah they work good… for a kiddy trail. if you are a serious hiker (like myself) you don’t walk on perfectly groomed trails (I RARELY hike or a trail at all!) internal frames are the best of the best for rough trail hiking (or no trail at all)
I think that a larger capacity of pack is needed rather than these internal frames with only 3 to 4 thousand cubic inches because they allow you to carry some of your troops gear or if your sleeping bag or pad is rather bulky.
what was the name of the tent that was in the article. i was going to look for it on ebay but my dad threw away the magazine
Thank you for the insight regarding hip belts and how to affix a tent and sleeping bag to a backpack when backpacking to a campsite.
Dear Backpack Camper,
Hip belts are a must in all situations. They are well worth the cost. Hip belts do reduce injury, but are also much more comfortable to where. The hip belt is designed to eliminate load on the shoulders, thus increasing range of motion and hikability. You will always want a hip belt once you try it out.
When camping I put the tent on the top under the top cover, and attach my sleeping bag to the bottom of my pack with tie-downs.
Are hip belts really worth the cost for people who go camping and hiking frequently to reduce injury to the lower back by placing the weight of the backpack on the pelvis? Or, are hip belts on a backpack only really needed for people who hike for distances such as at a High Adventure Camping Program. How does a person properly affix both a sleeping bag and a four person tent onto a back pack for hiking to a campsite?
YES hip belts are worth the cost. They help a bunch.
And for the affixing the sleeping bag: with a backpacking bag, just put it inside. For a regular bag, use the straps on the bottom of the bag. For a tent, either use the straps on the bottom if nothing else is there, or loosed the straps on the main pocket cover, put the tent under it, and tighten the straps
Here’s an Eagle Scout’s advice on picking the perfect pack.
Best jacket I have ever owned is the Columbia Titanium skiing outerwear jacket. It is waterproof, and has pockets on the side that can open to let in air. It also has arm pockets for my keys.
I have a waterproof bratheable softshell. It’s Columbia brand, and is really nice!
I went to philmont last year and obviously before going i bought rain gear because without it, the trip wouldve been miserable. The brand i got was called frog toggs, and they are amazing. they are breathable, 100% waterproof, compactable, they dry quickly, extremely light weight, and really really good priced. they also blocked the wind. they are a backpackers dream. lol. if u plan on going on a backpacking trip, i suggest you check them out
The odd thing is, when I go to war with the others in my troop, I wear the cheap stuff. The cheap is actually pretty good.
(we do war games on every outing)
I have a pac tech one and it works fine. It’s getting too small though.
You can find good rain gear for usually pretty decent prices. I got lucky with my gear. I found a Gore-Tex Paclite shell for $40 at Sportsman’s Warehouse!! Gore-Tex usually costs about $100-$180, but I found a great price. But for day hikes, I just bring a light poncho or something like that. Even a big trash bag can do the job, but it’s not recommended.
I have a Cherokee light weight 100% waterproof jacket
I use Gore-Tex shell & pants. 100% waterproof, 100% windproof, perfect for an all-day soaker. Gore-Text is typically heavier than Polypropylene, but not by much. Expensive, but worth it.
I actually found the info very useful. I like the red one best anyway.
Spyder jackets are the warmest best jackest I’ve ever worn! Pretty expensive at $299.99
I have a pair of REI rain pants and a Columbia titanium rain shell and they are the best I’ve ever had!!! I live in Hawaii so they get LOTS of use, espesially this last winter when Haleiwa town was flooded and people could kayak in the street!!!
im not much of winter camping person but i think with this information about wat type of “shells” is best suited 4 is awesome!!!
this was very helpful in picking out a spring and summer jacket for camp
My dad just got one of those blue jackets, and it’s amazing.
I have one similair to that one, they work very well.
Be prepared for all sorts of weather with one of these jackets or "shells."
any insect reppelen with no deet in it will not reppel mosqitoes
I think you should always add Aloe Vera gel to your firt aid kit. I hear it takes burns away quick and good.
Which is the better quality producer of first aid kits for camping and backpacking–the American Red Cross First Aid Kits or the first aid kits produced by Johnson and Johnson?
I do think it’s important to take the nesscesary supplies,
Otherwise if not, it will just be some extra weight
A couple brief comments about commercial (bought) first-aid packs.
First – the commercial packs are okay – and a potential rescuer can quite easily identify that they are a first aid kit. But you *need* to open them up, look through them (see what *is* in there – and more importantly, what is *not* in there) and adjust them for your own needs {diabetic? better have insulin; allergies? in goes the Benadryl}. Second, don’t assume your 6-year-old never-used first aid kit is good. Go through first aid (yearly, maybe) and replace out-of-date medications, cremes, etc.
its better to have a “made your self aid kit” than a purchased one, its cheaper and you always now where the stuff is.
i ‘m glad too about know this help for first aid kit keep it up informing us about this from ; max
yes first aids are cool but the one part about it is to take it with you on every camp out and boy life`s is cool
We used the REI Backpacker for a 6 day trek last summer. It’s light and packs easily. There is plenty of room to add extra stuff. We added some extra pairs of gloves and a couple of triangle bandages in case we needed to improvise a splint. The only down side is that there are some hidden pockets that might might make things hard to find in an emergency. Fortunately we didn’t need to use much of anything.
In any kit, be sure to use non-latex gloves and bandages. You cannot pick who you will be treating, and you will not know if they are allergic to latex.
Duct Tape! I never leave home with out it! I’ve backpacked over 4,000 miles and it is the only thing in my first aid kit that I use over and over again. It is significantly better than moleskin for blisters. Moleskin has a tendency to move or roll up when you do a lot of miles. Plus it is thick and sometimes creates a problem sore spot. The duct tape is thin and sticks extremely well. I’ve used it to splint fingers and a wrist, repair shoes, tent, pack, etc. I once made a cup to drink from. Great stuff. I just make several wraps around my walking sticks or water bottle and I’m good to go.
Thanks dude21 I will try that! Anyone else have any suggestions?
Well Dragon like the guide said think about what you do and then pack or buy one that has the things you need for the trip. Also I think you need to look at a sporting goods store if you buy because they most likely have the items you need for the first aid kit and can help you choose one in your price range and help figure out what you need as well.
I am going on a fishing/camping/hiking trip and I want to ask what you would recommend for a kit that can provide for about five people on a four day trip?
We carry a big self-made first aid kit to the camp site. When taking a hike, we each carry a specific item. If there are only a few of us, we carry bandages and something for stings/cuts. That way we can replenish what we need when we get back to base camp. We also carry a whistle in case we need emergent help.
If you have an alergy allways bring benadryl or if it is bad, an epi-pin.
i don’t see the atvantiges to buying a first-aid kit when the ones u make are a lot better on price and you know what the things in them are always going to be because i bought a frist aid kit and half of the stuff was missing
TRY TO MAKE IT LITE A COMPACK WITH TO STUFF YOU NEED.
SO WHEN BACKPACKING/HIKEING IT WILL BE EASYER
and, breed, you have a weird web site name. does it mean to breed humins?
Why is this website for all boys? I think you should make it for boys and girls. But otherwise, I love this website.
Be prepared with the right first-aid kit for your next adventure.
For christmas i got two 9 LED flashlights. Both metal. Both from HUSKY. I also got a awesome 1-3 LED streamlight headlamp. ( It has different settings, 1. one LED 2. 3 LED 3.Xenon bulb.) They are all very reliable.
Wallmart may be CHEAP but they do NOT have quality flashlights!! I bought one the night before my first camping trip and it did not even work!!! BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought one of those weird national zoo crank lights where you squeeze it and it charges. I wouldn’t recommend getting one of those. I dropped mine onto its side and the gears dislocated. Now the charging setting doesn’t work. Don’t trust National Zoo gift shops!!!
hey king tut and papa smurf, you can get a lithium version of that for 8 bucks more. it has twice the battery life.
by:troop637scout
this is another one of those things where there’s so much to choose from. i reccomend that you buy a wide beam flash light. it works great for any occassion wheather your hiking in the mountains or going from your tent to a tree for a restroom break. it lights up the night and dosen’t eat up battries quick.
by:troop637scout
also, if you have any questions for me, just type them here in the blog but put question for troop637scout. thanks.
Just like troop637scout said, you want a wide beam.
I reccommend maglite led 3 watt,I have one and it works
very well.
princeton tec lights may be a little on the pricey side. but I found one called aurora thats somewhere between 20-45$ [can't remember had it for so long (still works)]. it’s one of the brightest in my troop and i’ve yet to break it. p.s. MAG lights are great around home and camp but dont recomend for backpacking due to metal frame.
MAG LITES ALL THE WAY! NO WAY I WOULD USE ANY OTHER FLASH LIGHT.:)
petzls are good $20-40 but well worth prise black diamond also good headlamps
maglite aa’s model are also one of my favorites
maglite sells converter kits for their flashlight like led and bottom push button
maglites can also be used like a candle or lantern if you take off cap and put it on bootom
It’s better if you actually get a crankable light , since you never have to change the batteries or light bulbs. Plus its useful for emergencies.
Princeton Tec is a great flashlight and headlamp brand.(Their flash lights are so small, I fit it in my survival kit.The lights have a low, med, high, and flash modes.)
i have an energizer one that i bought from wal-mart and it works fine for me.
I used one of the Energizer LED head lamps from Wal Mart for 6 months while through hiking the Appalachian Trail. Used it every night and only changed the batteries 3 times! Great head lamp.
i’ve found out that when you are sleeping on a campout it is easier to put your flashlight in a boot or shoe than on the ground next to you becouse if nature calls and you cant find your flashlight than your in trouble.
i have a light weight aluminum one that is great for backpacking, then i have an l.e.d lamp for summer camp, and a larger flashlight for camping trips.
I bought an energizer headlamp that works great…it has four settings and the power lasts long….good
I have a nice crankable flashlight that is slightly dimmer than some others, but it’s good for outdoor camping. I’m not sure about caving, however. And bobscout 45, was caps lock on and you were looking at the keyboard, or were you using caps lock on purpose? I want to know, because all caps is bad internet etiquiite.
GREAT ADVISE
FOR SCOUT CAMP THE LED LIGHTS WORK BEST
GET EM FROM ACADEMY CAUSE WALMARTS WELL THEIR NOT DEPENDABLE
I have a wind up flashlight and it is great for reading in the Tent!!!!(for all you readers out there) It’s great but it runs out of juice really fast.
i would suggest getting one of those flashlights that all u have to do is charge it up using a little crank on the side. it not brightest but will keep you out of dark
mAG LIGHTES ARE OK AND ARE CHEAP BUT YOU CAN GET MUCH BETTER ONES
i agree love guns, i have a mag lite too and its great!
Walmart sells a single AA cell LED flashlight that is light and small and will last all night for about $5. I keep one in my search and rescue packas a spare.
mag-lights work very well, have a life time warenty, and they have a extra light bulb
in the bottom! I have one and it lastid for 5 years!
Whether caving or camping, here are tips to help you pick the right headlamp or flashlight.
yo i board and this guide is wicked. it helps me all the time. Sims is a good board brand and is about 600 including bindings good luck
Burton makes top of the line snowboarding gear for all terrains and ages
dear proborder,
how much does a burton snowbord cost?
Depends on the type, Custom or factory, freestyle,or all mountain.
But usually from $400-1,000
go to play it again sports for a board i got a acome lamar board for only 60 bucks
i love to snowboard! My dad and i just started last winter and we just loved it.
Buying used skis can give you almost the same quality as new, at a decimal of the price. Plus, they usually come with bindings
Uber and epic!!!!!!!!!! Should I get the Burton Dom Grom?
you should buy ur gear it the costs add up if you keep renting
Buying your own gear isn’t worth it if you go three times a year. i’m an avid snowboarder and i spend 2 to 4 weeks on the mountain. i buy a new board every year with the money i get off being a camp counselor. right now im rocking a Rome MOD if your a big freestyle rider i suggest this board if you have 5 grand. Its sooo light
I love to snowboard and this article is very interesting, I even learned a lot I didn’t know!
I learned how to ski but I gotta get my own gear and not rentals man
I have ridden alot of boards and the height sould be between your nose and yourchin
Monique, a Leaf fan, set up this absolutely persistent to believe. Now, let me goal out that this was in no way an undertake to articulate one pair is raise than the other. It was objective a core to articulate two things.
The guide seems to have the pricing on the expensive side, at least for skiis. I spent $200 for my skiis, and my boots were about $150.
i looked in my boys life magizine and i bought a new snowboard and i did a 360 2 going off a jump
I really liked the guide. I printed it and took it to REI to buy a pair of skis. It hasn’t really snowed yet, but I cant wait to use ‘em!
if u want a really good snowboard for pretty much anything go for a sapient coast it is the best board i have ever ridden
i like the solomon lord skis. very verstile ansd tough
sounds like fun. since i skate i should try snowboarding!
dude, im 6’2 and ride 160 and i have a pair of 99cm. they do not need to be that long. no way. no skis anymore should be that long unless you doing powder and hucks, or racing. so if your really going to drop 600-800 for ski and binding, buy the right ones!
Get ready to shred with these need-to-know basic buying tips for skis and snowboards.
OK yall dont know any thing about Mountain bikes. First off $259 is a OK price spark, second Schwinn is OK….but Treks, Giants, Cannondales, and Specializeds are MUCH better. 5 times the price but soooo worth it. Wal mart bikes are VERY HEAVY and dont last u. (if u actually ride it 2 times a week) Last, stay away from wall mart or target, Try Dick’s, acadmey or a local bike shop….most of their bikes ARNT made in china.
Hook em horns
Most of their bikes are made in China they are just better quality.
Take a close look. They are probably made in China. My father has 2 old Treks and a Schwinn made in the USA:-)
kona rocks i love it i do not have one but i know how much it rocks!!!!!
MONGOOSE bikes are absoulutley terrible never buy they may look cool but fall apart
I got a schwinn from target too, but It’s front brakes stick, and the back tire rims are a little bent now after using it, but it’s still pretty good averall
get a tonka full suspension from walmart in 20in. I love mine and didnt have to spend alot of cash only 59.99!
For bicycle essentials for bikers who ride on roads with regular vehicle traffic, I’d include a flourescent orange zippered sweat shirt or a flourescent orange traffic triangle flag along with other bicycle reflectors that vehicle drivers can spot in low visibility situations from greater than fifty yards from a bicyclist–for the essence of bicycle safety.
my dad has a shwin sidewinder that is more than 10 years old but it is a great bike.
I got a Schwinn spitfire from a department store and it works just fine, thabk you.
Got a Schwinn S-60–It’s awesome! I do all sorts of wheelies and bunnyhops on it!
I got a Trek 820… It’s nice. Konas are really amazing, too.
Konas are the best types of bikes. If you get a kona, you’re reallly getting into the area of high performance and durable bikes, with great components.
I have a mongoose. I was on of those $100 Wal-Mart ones, but it’s good enough for me!
That’s weird. I cant find any boys’ bikes at walmart. I’m assuming you ride my size because if you were any bigger it would probably cost around $200.00, right?
One tip. unless you do SERIOUS riding, never spend too much on a cannondale.
You should never even consider getting a bike from a department. all it will do is break into pieces within a couple of days. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $. I’m 17 and have purchased all of my bike from bike shops. They have better products and better customer service. I’ve been mountain biking for 6 years. I started out on a Trek 3700 for about $350. Now I have a Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo that cost me about $1500. Money well spent!!!
GARY FISHER is the way to go i have a green wahoo i plan to get disc brakes for it works great for beginners looking into mountain biking
$100.00 bikes from wal-mart are not a very good choice because they are very heavy, fragile, and the suspension is extremely stiff. If you want a good bike you will have to go above $250.00.
You cannot forget the mongoose mountain bikes. They are awesome! I went on a trail with my mongoose spark ( dual suspension, Dual disc brakes, Front and rear fenders, 21 speed and side handle bars and $259.00.) and it didn’t even creak.
By the way is $259.00 a good price?
trek is without a doubt the probly the best moutain bike and road bike around. i have a trek and its a great bike to ride on trails and theings like that and it is a pretty good on the road to…..
No bob, a $104 wal-mart bike is not good. if you do anything more that ride around very easy trails or the streets it will break. Do yourself a favor and buy a nice bike from a shop. I have a Trek 4200…i think. Its very nice
Day before yesterday was my 11 bday so i got a trek 820 [16"] for $300 this guide is okay, but they should suggest some models.
Last year I bought my first mountain bike for $350.00 at Trails End. I now race with WVMBASS (west virginia mountain bike assoc) I also ride on the W AND O(WASHINGTNTON and Ohio rail road) i ride on my rode bike 21 mi in 1 hour to Purcellville to Washingston
i have a specialized rochhopper. it cost 770.00. its a great bike, and comes in many sizes (im 6′ 4″)
I almost bought a schwinn but then went to a bike shop and for 150 more and got the more exspensive and is cooler looking lighter
and better
i found a dual suspension at wal-mart for 104.00 and its really good.
Ride On! Choosing the right mountain bike is fun and easy.
Cool guide. Gear Guy, what is the name of the board with the pointed nose?
zumiez is the best place to buy 85$ for a good board find at local mall
hey is it true paul rodriguez is the best street skater well i think that
did you see dany ways big shin slam on x games 14 that was knarly
They should make a skateboarding merit badge
That would be super sick
DARKSTAR is way better than plan Bs or girl skates and aderew renolds is a sick skater
go to BC surf and sport they have the best skateboards
I have had a walmart board for almost a year now and it seems okay!
ALWAYS WEAR PADS!!! It is important to wear a helmet and knee pads because I have wiped out once without any pads and that hurt!
THANKS FOR THE TIPS, IWAS THINKING ABOUT BUYING FROM SPORTS ATHORATIE ,BUT A SKATEBOARD SHOP IS BEATER.
I started with a walmart board, then when to get complete, then a customized. Get good griptape such as mob, and fast bearings, such as bones which are okay. Get hard wheels if you skate street, huge wheels for vert, and freestyle I don’t know. Tight trucks for vert (ramps and bowls). Start with tight trucks and as you get better you can loosen it to your liken. It will be harder to land tricks, untill you get use to it, pivots(180′s) will be harder too.
Plan B, Almost, Zero, Element, and Girl are all great brands. I suggest getting one of those at your local skate shop.
i was gonna buy a board at walmart, but now i know batter. thanks!
If people have junk food than they will go fat. Some people are fat some are skiney.
Most peoplelove junk food most like healthey food like, paires, apples, grapes, orianges and manderiens.Junk food is not healthey.
I have a board and I wanted some tips on how to ride it.
If you’re looking to save a little money on a board…ask the skate shop for their “blank” decks. It’s the board itself without the graphics that you pay extra for because they’re licensed designs. Then you can decorate the bottom of the board with your own stickers etc.
im looking for a good one-man backpacking tent. I recently used a kelty one man for backapcking, and it was really good. Are there any other tents like that?
I will say that the Eureka Solitaire is a pretty nifty tent. I have not bought one or used one but my friend who is also in my troop has one.For right now I think I will stick with my hooch..
Where is the Big Agnes Seedhouse series. They are good tents that do well backpacking. The one person version is a mansion for one.
i got a cool 4 people tent from Cabelas.ROCK ON!
You cannot beat the Eureka Timberline for price, quality and durability. Look around, you’d be surprised what you’ll find. Local army surplus store sells the Timberline 2 for $53.00 out the door.
i just bought a 25 dollar tent thats a two man and extremely light and durable.
I agree i use a tent cot over my troop’s tents for one i can sleep alone and it is a lot better to carry and set up.
Forget all tents you know of Tent Cots by cabelas ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i dont like my nickname bigdaddy$$ i’m changing it to uh swizzy#1
that stuff is cool and easy
camping is ultimant fun
i went on a 5 mile hike about 3 weeks ago it was hard the whole thing was basicly all up hill
One of my fellow scouts has at least a 10 person tent
Best tent ever was the ones that Coleman made for the National Jamboree in 2001. It had 2 doors ( one on the east and one on the west side) so we did not have to crawl over each other to get to our stuff and big enough to hold 3 people and could stand in the tent to change clothes. Wish they were for more than just Jamboree. I would buy one for myself now if I could ever find it!
hey uncle mike i hav a bigger ozark train tent then wat u want us to get!!! lol
I have a tent like the colemen weather master but its a better one!!!
get the 10x 8 ozark trail tent easy to set up and take down coleman isnt that good
my dad got me a coleman exponent for $30 at Marshals
i went online to get another tent and found out that it started at $300
its been a year now and its been great
if you want a cheap tent, i sugest going to department stors like Burlington coat factory and T.J.Maxx. u might find a good deal
the Eureka Solitaire looks cool i will look in to geting one
If you are going on hot/dessert camping trips seek lighter colored tent’s in stead of black and brown ones
To Ian,
We’re looking for a 2-person, 3-weather tent for boyscout campings. What brands do you recommend for a durable, lightweight and easy to set up (this is our deciding factor) tent? Thank you.
REI (I used my Halfdome in the Himalayas), Kelty, Marmot, Big Agnes, and the MSR Hubba Series work great.
From my experience in scouting and retail, often a scout needs a tough tent to do the job. So if a scout is going to get himself a nice tent, he should definitely get a footprint for it and be very careful with it. Another thing to consider for scouts is that there is a rule that scouts must share a tent with another scout or parent because of the buddy system, so this eliminates most one-person tents, including bivy sack.
Also, in my experience, the REI Half Dome and Quarter Dome don’t work as well as equally priced tents of other brands. If you’re looking for a lightweight 1-person shelter, I’d probably go for a bivy sack.
i love the eureka solitire because you can put your pack out of the tent but its still in side.
The Gear Guy helps you pick just the right shelter for your outdoor adventures.
this was very helpful, i got a marmot sawtooth that is rated to 15 degrees, but it will keep you snug and warm at -30 degrees if you wear a hat.
Campmor sells a house brand down mummy sleeping bag that is a steal. Its rated at 20 degrees but it is probably more like 30. 120 bucks for a 550-fill down bag.
I agree with Ultimate Scoutmaster, you need to go more to the cold side vs getting a warmer bag. Always remember head gear, the times I have been most uncomfortable, I have forgotten my beanie when sleeping in colder weather.
my neighbor gave me a really warm and small blanket for camping that gos under 0 degrees.he made my day!
I am going to Philmont this summer and I realized while going through my gear that my sleeping bag is heavy and compresses to the size of yoga ball (around a yard on the side). I need a good stuff sack that is light weight, that compresses really small, and will keep me warm on Mt. Baldy. Which brand should I get and what model?
i have a negative 15 degree from Dick’s. got it for 50$ then used a ten dollar coupon!
paid as much as a 40 degree costs!!!!!!!!!
I’ve got a NorthFace sleeping bag – minus 20 degrees and it keeps me warm. Weighs about 1.5 lbs and condenses to the size of a soccer ball with a compression bag.
I got a -15 degree sleeping bag that cost 128.00 it was on sale for 69.00 the cahier rang it up 45.00 and i had two gift cards (20.00,25.00) so i ended up paying 8.00 (that was the tax)
I have a synthetic bag that goes down to 30 degrees, but it’s HUGE! I want to get a new one, but come on, 75$ is a lot for a sleeping bag, and advice for buying, a small, less expensive sleeping bag?
i have a sleeping bag and it’s rated at 0 deggres and it’s extreymly cofertable at summer camp in souther Indiana so isent the rating the maximum tempacer that you can be in befor it gets uncofterbal?
It is my belief that every person (not just Scouts) should have a sleeping bag that goes down to 0 degrees. If it is too warm, you can just unzip it a little. Sooner or later, you will need that lowest temperature rating, and your life may depend on it. The lower the rating, the more days of the year that you can go camping later. I consider a 40 degree bag is just about useless. It gives you a false sense of security, but still costs money. Also you can add quite a bit of warmth by wearing an oversized hooded sweatshirt or a ski-cap at night. You need to keep your head and neck warm to be able to go to sleep. Mummy bags will definitely keep you warmer, you just have to get used to the restricted area around your feet and the bag closing in around your face. Get a bag that is a little extra long and it feels a lot better. I couldn’t care less about a light-weight sleeping bag or a highly compressible sleeping bag. About 99% of the camping is done within 50′ of a car. Warmth is the most important thing.
I really don’t know what sleeping bag in between weather
what about air mattreses or cots? recommendations? I have a self inflating one but it is so small and slips during the night. Especially important during long term camping of over a week.
Add a fleece bag liner to your equipment list. It will make any ( almost any ) bag warm and cozy, just like dressing in layers. And best of all, it can easily be washed at home after every trip.
Well i have 1 sleeping bag already but its for camping in the summer. I’m looking to buy a new one though!
Down or Synthetic down is the warmest comfiest sleeping bag you’ll ever find but if it gets wet it loses all it’s warmth. on the other hand synthetic its not as warm but if it gets wet it will not lose it’s warmth
I’ve already tested out a bag for my upcoming trip to lost valley, CA. If you want a SMALL sleeping bag, you can get a “bag” that can compress a little more smaller than a basketball. I suggest going to big 5 or rei. Happy camping!!!
I have been using my dads sleeping bag when I go camping but I need to get my own.this information will help me pick out the right sleeping bag for me.Thanks
I don’t have a sleeping bag, so I have to borrow my dad sleeping bag every time I go camping with my friend.
I have a peak 1 -0 degree bag and I just cant ask for any thing better, it is a great all year round bag.
I have an Big Agnes encampment bag and it is the perfect bag for year round camping- it’s beast!!!!!!
i have an rei synthetic bag that is great but the zipper always gets caught in the frabric but overall it is a great bag
Sleep comes easy when you have the right bag for the job. Here are some tips to help you pick a sleeping bag.
They are the best, and can always get you unstuck or out of trouble
I think gerber knives are the best, they are sharp, and stay sharp.
Leathermans are the best knives in the world. The metal is good. I reccomend the Leatherman Blast Multi-Tool, and the Leatherman e301. Both are locking and the e301 is single blade, although it does have carabiner/bottle opener. I have both and they are very good. They stay sharp and sharpen easily.
i have a leatherman folding nife, locks in place, liteweight great for serious user. I recomend Leatherman brand nifes.
For my Bar Mitztva i got a really good knife that folds out into pliers
My knife is real helpful for carving sticks and surviving in the wild
pick a knife that fits your hand not too big or to small. if you don’t you will get blisters i know from experince.
I got a multi-tool for my last birthday and it has been awesome. It does whatever I need it to and it is light. I carry my locking blade knife with me too, it is also very handy, but multi-tools are the way to go.
carolina knives r pretty vice along with buck knives i have both
Swiss Army Knifes Are The Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )
Thats a good deal for a 75-piece tool. Do you know what all the tools are?
I’ve got a Swiss Army knife. It’s been really helpful on camp-outs and it’s cheep. Another thing that makes it handy is that it’s glow-in-the-dark so I never lose it.
what knife for 15 bucks?
it would be kool to see some knife reviews.
A lock blade can be good when using your knife point (such as when whittling holes in things), however, for simple woodcarving and ninety percent of the other uses of a pocket knife a standard folding blade is generally fine, especially if you practice standard knife safety when using it. I’ve carried a knife for over 20 years and while I have cut myself on occasion, can’t remember a single time it’s been because the blade folded on me. (Though I do have a friend who buried his blade in his thigh because he was playing with the locking feature).
As for the huge multi-tools, ensure that the handle isn’t too big to be unwieldly. The fatter the ‘pocket’ knife, the easier it can be for it to slip out of your hand while using it, meaning the more ‘uses’ advertised, the less useful it can sometimes become.
If you get a pocket or folding knife it should have a lock-blade feature. You can get a bad cut from it folding up on you if you don’t. I prefure one bladed lock blades or fixed blades.
The Gerber multitools are very well rated I carry the proscout 600 . I also carry a Benchmade 705 that does every thing I need. Sadly they no longer make this one. Check EBAY. I chose these after reading a survival website.
for knifes i like just a single blade fine edge knife that is always razor sharp.
which one is better the multi-tools with pliers or all-purpose folding pocketknives?
I suggest a knife that small & light weight + it should have a lock blade.
Some of these can be found at most sporting good stores.
I love knives! there one of my faverate thihgs to collect.
Be prepared for anything with a trusty knife or multi-tool. Here's how to choose the best one to fit your needs.
Sadly, a lot of bike helmets are to expensive for parents that are cheap.
I have been hit and run by a buzzed driver, run off the road, crashed into a concrete trash can at about 12 mph and struck a car that illegally cut in front of me at 40 mph on my motorcycle. I walked away from those accidents because of my helmets. I am writing this because of my helmets. Always get a helmet that is designed for the activity. Contrary to “get up and go” all helmets are not the same. Bell and Gyro are good helmets for cycling and they also have a crash replacement warranty. The bike shop or the company can give details. “Live to Ride. Ride to Live”.
Thats why you shouldnt rid motorcycles! My motto is “Jesus Died For You. Now You Live For Him”
When I got mountaineering, I just use my ski helmet. It’s pretty much the same thing, plus I can keep my ears warm and listen to my mp3 while climbing.
Giro helmets are one of the best helmets, you can wear one without looking stupid
i use a bell 1 and it is fine even thougt it is olny about $10
Well, I say unless your intending to fly of your bike, headlong over a cliff, save your money.
Pretty much all helmets serve for the same cause, and do it the same way.
Some of them are bigger, some of them are more aerodynamic, some of them are plastic, some of them styrofoam, etc. etc. etc. But like I say, their all pretty much the same thing.
If you go caving like I do, a bike helmet works well. Just duct-tape a headlamp to it, and tah-dah!!!
But a helmet made for stuff like that is recommended, if you can find a store that has that stuff.
as a dirtbiker, pocket rocket rider, and seadoo driver (yes helmets are good on seadoos.) i prefer a bell motorcycle helmet
bell is extremely reliable brand of helmets. i like the helmets with the mesh in the mouthpiece area to keep the the bugs out XD.p.s dont buy a brand youve never heard of do a little reasearch and find out the features dont buy helmets with foreigen substances because u might be allegic to the material bye pplz
Some areas of the country don’t require bikers to wear helmets; however, if you ever rode a bike on a macadem bike path and accidently fell off of your bike, you would have always wished to have the bicycle safety equipment for bike riding. Asphalt and Cement bicycle paths are gentle when a bicyclist falls on the bike path. Macadem bicycle paths really scrape a person quite badly which may require in-depth first aid by another bicyclist who comes upon a downed bicyclist. This is a great article regarding bicyclist safety helmets.
I REALLY need a helmet and this helps on what kind to get.
Nice guide. I hate it when people don’t wear helmets. I’ve seen people fall off their bike and end up going to the hospital because they wanted to look cool and not wear a helmet.
help find a helment for bmx riding. i went with the pro-tec b2 40 bucks.
just want to say sixsixone mullent helment is very nice for about $30 bucks.
Picking (and wearing) the right helmet can be a life or death decision. Don’t worry — we’ve made it easy for you.
Bushnell & Tasco are both good starter optics. Inexspencive and good mid-range spotting.
I love Bushnell’s. They work great and do not cost an arm and a leg.
i got some from a stl cardinals base ball game once
I just use the 50$ binocs from LLbean, cheap and pretty nice.
Bushnell optics binoculars are around 40$ and very good can buy anywhere
NO, bushnell are NOT very good!!
the L.L. bean ones are fairly nice-compact-and cheap-50$
this is very frusterating as it does not recomend anything like they usally do
I really like those big expensive eagle eye binoculars, but like I said, their big, and expensive.
If you want a good pair of binoculars, that aren’t too big, or expensive, try the Binolux 8×21 binoculars.
Their small, light, you get a crystal clear image, and their not too expensive!
I’ve used mine for bird watching, scout outings, capture-the-flag, and that’s just too name a few things.
I would highly recommend them!
I wish BL would just choose, test and review several pairs of binoculars in different price ranges and tell us which pair worked best in each price range.
Bushnell makes cool binoculars, but Luepold makes the best. The bad thing though is that their binoculars and hunting scopes are very expensive. Nikon also makes good binoculars, but I think they should stick with making cameras instead.
Most of the time, the most magnification that someone needs while camping is less than 125x power on a person’s binocular. Some really good binoculars with about 50x magnification power have 35 millimeter photography film cameras as attachments to the binoculars. If you see a large, rarely seen bird such as a condor or egret, you can always focus the binoculars and capture a picture with the small camera attachment to the pair of binoculars.
Egrets aren’t rare. Well at least not in Louisiana they aren’t.
buy a good pair of binoculars that are good and the one you like.
Did you try a pair of Night Vision Binoculars? My 4 year old enjoys them more than anybody in my family for deer watching.
Thanks a lot, Jim Wilson!!! I’m a budding birdwatcher myself. I’ve seen 17 different types of birds and I’ve only been watching for 1 month!
Hey guys the reason you don’t need a telescope for the merit badge or star gazing is summed up in 3 words “Field of view”. Are you looking at the outer most reaches of our galaxy or the constellation of Ursa Minor? That’s the difference.
when I was doing astronomy merit badge the guy said to geta good pair of binoculars in stead of a telascope
Pick the right binoculars, and it’s a cinch to bring far things close. We’ll show you how.
Not sure which gear to buy? Need tips for maintaining your equipment?
Thank you! You often write very interesting articles. You improved my mood.I’ll be back again.
dude, I shred like no tommorow.
Wow, great post! Well-written, informative and eye-opening. Will definitely be checking out your blog more in the future
I’ve learned a lot from your blog here,Keep on going,my friend,I will keep an eye on it,One more thing, thanks for your post
for base layer I would do under armour cold wear it is great .
COOL! get it!
WHY do skis Have to be so expensive
Thankyou soooo much, I needed new gear and this stuff is great! BTW, buy the cheap stuff, works very well for the price!
Sounds like good gear but too expensive. Make the prices lower. And how do you buy the gear? I need some gear!
