On treasure maps of old, X marked the spot. Today’s treasure might be marked N 41 51.649 W 085 46.433. Confused? Then you probably haven’t heard about geocaching, a modern-day treasure hunt activity.
somebody let me know if it is legel to use lights in illonois to fish!
Fishing at night is very fun. I’ve been doing it for years. To get the hang of it, fish from the shore at night before trying it in a boat.
Fishing with a light is illegal in some states, such as this one. Other states allow it in certain waters, not in others. Check the regulations where you intend to fish and avoid the worries.
YOU CAN FISH FOR MANY TYPES OF FISH AT NIGHT BUT ONLY SOME FISH ARE ACTIVE AT NIGHT
it is not illegal to fish at night, but you need to be careful the law changes where you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!there is not many places you can do it .BUT MOST IMPORTANT IT IS LEGAL IN SOME PLACES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ya i am taking a wildlife law class and it is ilegal
WHERE ARE YOU TAKING CLASSES IN WILDLIFE LAW ???????????? IT SEEMS YOU COULD BE WRONG ABOUT THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah I think it is illegal to attract fish with light
fishing in the dark is better than fishing in light
Remember don’t go to place that u need a fishing license when you don’t have one.
I always put my Phone & Wallet in a zip lock bag to keep it dry
I never know that you could fish at night.I want to do it
cool but I think it’s illegal to atrack fish with a flashlight or any other beam of light
you could tie a glowstick on to your line it will attract more fish and you wont waste bateries on yuor flashlight!
this isn’t a good idea because if fish see light in one place and the rest is dark they will figure out your fishing.
Booyah!Landed a whole entire school.By the way my daddy taught me all this stuff.
DANGEROUS! If you pull up into brush in the event you hang up, there may be cottonmouths on the limbs. Judgment of distance and inability to see floating logs or stick-ups is another danger. Going with someone with experience will be a great benefit and could be a life-saver.
Fishing after dark takes skill. Here are tips to help you catch your limit.
i’m not even a scout i am more along the lines of a survivalist
eh i got 600 but then again i was never really good with knots or compasses, although i’m not even a scout i am more along the lines of a survivalist
has lots of glitches… repeats q’s by disguising them as the next q and then scolds you.
This quiz is helpful… it just needs to be a lot longer and then it will help more.
It was pretty cool and it was really easy, even though I got some wrong.
i got some wrong and some write but im a scout in pack 115 and been camping many times so i know what to do
i got 5 out of 10 and by the way number 9 makes no sense because it says on one question to bury it
I got four stars or nine out of ten on my secont try. I think some of them are wrong but thats just me. It’s fun!
I like this game, now I have a little more of what I should do then what I shouldn’t
I’ve been out of scouting for twenty years, but still did ok. I think that part of the problem is that the quiz is less about camping knowledge than impact on environment. Only a few of the questions were actually pertinent to being a successful camper, versus a low-impact camper. They are not equivalent.
I got 10 out of 10 and I’m only tenderfoot
i got 7 out of 10 pretty good but i bet my patrol leader could do better
that was pretty cool and all the questions were educational
I scored three out of ten. I suppose that I am on camping restriction in the Order of the Arrow Boy Scout Honor Camper Society. I need to continue to practice safe camping and hiking policies.
Ready to put more "outing" into "Scouting"? You will be, once you ace this quiz on camping basics.
At my camp we have one of those things that they called the blob and there was some guy fishing off of it and me and six of my friends jumped on it and he went flying.LOL!
it was awesome…..it was actualy pretty cool…….i like it when you guys got on one side of the baloon and they other jumped and the other guy flew in they air….ha….ha…ha…ha…ha…ha…ha
Hey it’s worth noting that this council also does a similar week for older Scouts called Chisholm Trail Adventure. The Scouts are able to visit these same areas and some others. Very cool stuff! I’d take my troop!!!!
That was cool i am a boy scout all of my troop members love that vido on gun’s
Id love to do all that.
It makes me want to be a Venturer Scout too.
I’m a Life Boy Scout soon to become a Venturer. My goal is to achieve both Eagle and Ranger. All of these activities look like a lot of fun, I would like to try the Blob real soon.
That was cool. i love the civil war and the texas rangers I would love to try that
the last clip was cool , i like when a kid did a back flip haha
YEAHHH….i have been waiting for this to hit…i am one of the venturer’s that took part in the road to ranger program…i have to say it was a real great experience to participate on the pilot course and get to try things that may be changed in the future depending how things went. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to try something new.
This is teriffic ! ! ! Why don’t all Scout camps hold a Road to Ranger week or long weekend?
I wish my troup did cool stufe like that I love guns and texas rangers and all that cool stufe
I am one of the Cavalry staff members in the video and was I suprised when I heard that Boy’s Life was coming to visit our outpost. Our Lt. was a great instructor and sure made things as real as possible.
Venturers from the Lone Star State take significant steps toward earning the Ranger Award during a week at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch in north Texas.
There was some good information here. Thanks for sharing
Common Sense-
The two answers don’t contradict each other; the discrepancy between the two answers occurs due to the situation at hand. When your canoe capsizes, you may get hypothermia before help arrives. When lost in a forest, though, chances of survival by waiting increase almost exponentially.
i got a 100% but if an animal comes it could be aa animal that may hurt you if you try to make noise and scare it away
Question 2 and 4 contradict each other. One tells you that you’re your best own rescuer, and the other tells you to wait for help.
I feel there are some wrong answers and hi schultzy.
There were three questions with an either wrong answer or no correct answers.
I AM A EAGLE SCOUT AND WE ALL SHOULD LEARN OUR FIRST AIDE SKILLS AND KEEP IT IN OUR MINES.WE MIGHT HAVE TO TEACH OTHER THIS FIRST AIDE STUFF TO OTHER PEOPLE AND NEW SCOUTS.
to ‘a chicken’, that was the correct answer in the test
Great quiz!
However, on the Blister question it says to puncture the blister. In the BS manual it says not too do that because it makes it an open wound (I remember reading). Which is correct?
that was easy. I got 10 out of 12 on the test. I comletely agree with “a chicken” It says that in the scout handbook. I completely agree with you!
I agree with pianosmurf. I got 1000 points, but some answers were different than I was taught. For instance with the fishing hook question, I was taught to push the hook completely through, cut off the barb and pull the hook back out from the direction it came.
it was okay but some of the questions weren’t what i was tought.
I got a 600. Half the time I was right. I’ll take this quiz a few more times…
realy educational for both first aid and emergency prepardness merite badges.
Thanks for the quiz! Now to brush up on my first aid skills
what if there isn’t any clothes or hat at shelter? Or no shelter at all?
Whether you're on the trail or just having fun in the park, it's easy to get into trouble. Accidents happen. People don't think ahead -- or just plain don't think. Here are 12 such situations. Would you know how to handle them? Take this quiz and compare your answers to those Boys' Life got from the experts.
I’m new to Boy Scouts, and haven’t bought my gear yet. About how much will it cost ad what will I need? Should I buy from the BSA website?
Why don’t you simply ask your SPL or Scoutmaster for a check list for the outing? Simple! Our unit posts them on our Troop’s web site and news letters.
Yes there should realize the opportunity to RSS commentary, quite simply, CMS is another on the blog.
Hey boys life, could you do a checklist for a fishing trip?
wish they had an actual check off list that could be printed for each thing
but
is so great and I’m so happy I found it
wish they had an actual check off list that could be printed for each thing
I’m putting my checklists into my PDA, with the rest of my scouting information.
What if you don’t have enough room for all that clothing?
Stick 1 or 2 dryer sheets in your uniform shoulder loops.
This is a good mosqito repellent
another thing you could do is: print the lists on color-coded cardstock printing paper (red for essentials, orange for warm, dark blue for cold, aqua for paddling and green for bicycling), and then laminate them. they will be durable, easy to find and recognize, and you will be able to use expo marker on them!
Print out one list, flip the page over, and print another list on the back. Now you only use up two pages of paper. Once the ink is dry get the lists laminated. Now instead of printing out a new list every time you can just use a expo marker and wipe the list off when your done Go Green!!!!
the printable versions are nice, but i wish you could print every list at once
You guys supply insightful info. And I would suggest any troop to cut and paste in to handouts to the scouts.
I am always forgetting stuff after 35 years in Scouting. I probably forget these lists too. LOL
I’ do my best though.
these lists arent the best. personally i think bl should have a section where we can make our own lists based on these. how about it?
happy camping! 637x
Every time i go camping, i look at the list. it has been so helpful
These are good lists. It should be pointed out to scouts, however, that their Scout Handbook provides the basic lists — Scouts should always remember this important reference first!
ASMbiker is right, your scout book has all you need
I have a friend who dosen’t know very much of anything of scouting. This data should help him know a lot more know! Thanks Boyslife!!!
I never knew that I needed some of this stuff. This has made camping a lot more fun!
I agree with you Upton. I have the very same problems as you do. I forget everything that I need and then I just do nothing.
Wow, This is really great! Now we don’t have to worry about not having the correct gear. Thank You So Much.
This is information is an asset. I am a very forgetful person now-a-days when it comes to packing. Now, I have nothing to worry about.
Need to know what you need to bring on your next trip? Here are gear checklists and expert tips for all kinds of outdoor adventures.
why is the first layer start out with a slant i know it makes the other layers spiral. why does the spiral help with the moisture
lots of snow in colorado today! I’ll give it a shot cause it’s that wet heavy snow
This Really doesn’t work I tried it the sides were not next to eachother it looked terrible.
i’m going to use this for a school project. thanks Boy’s Life!
to bild a igloo you need to have thick snow to bild a igloo. have good luck
I want to try but my sister has to make a snow man SO I’ll get up eary.
First i need a lot of snow that is only if there is a snow storm in Ohio.
It worked great, the under ground door was so cool, i even made some
shelfs because i made my snow wall, brick things a foot thick
It just snowed again and we already have tons of snow. We’re going to try this in a week or two.
I am making a igloo right now outside because in minnesota we are getting a snowstorm right now.
I live in MN we get tons of snow tough night we are supposed to get 6-8 inches of snow 4 days ago we got 6 inches this will work great
if you get 2-4″ of snow.. snow blow all the snow to a 15′ x 15′ area.. you should have about 3′ of snow then.. pack this down and lightly mist with water.. let this freeze a few hours… Then cut the blocks to build using the snow from the inside of the igloo
I do not get much snow where i live but i’ll try it!
this looks so cool. we don’t have any snow in pennsylvania rite now though
bummer, this will never work in houston! last time we had snow was 2 years ago and it only stayed on cars!
i’ll try this someday but too bad i live in a part of Pennsylvania where i almost get no perfect snowstorms
i tried this too and cant make one because there is not a very deep depth of snow
also are there instructions 4 building a igloo with a above ground door
The best-known snow shelter is the igloo. A brilliant use of engineering and resources, this simple dome made out of snow blocks is both strong and versatile.
Tey need to rearrange the the animal around tracks. But I got 800pts.
my first try i got like 300 because we don’t have alot of those animals where i live. but who would mistake a horse track for a deer track? i mean anybody whose been around horse’s know they have 1 toe meaning one hoof without any breaks unless the edges have been chipped.
600 600 600 600 600 600 600
Can you see if you no what I got
cool game………My dad said studying that animal tracking book would come in useful one day………
I got the skunk question right! First try!
that was hard i got just a 400 outta 800
=P!!!
I didn’t do well the first time, but did well on the second
dang it looks like i need to now a little more about animals
I got a 800 77 times I love this game. I also want to win the xbox really bad. I am very good at this game
very fun but could have more questions and be harder and even have colour
How well can you identify animal tracks? Take our quiz and find out!
I also live in New Zealand. There are scouts but they have both boys and girls in them.
I live in MN so we get tons of snow adn would GLADLY share it!
I wish you could share some with me….it looks like it’s going to be a mild winter here in Ohio…..
i wish i could do this stuff but i live in hawaii
I am going to do all of this stuff today, its snowing.
What state do you live in? I live in Texas it never snows here
wow i had no idea you could do any of this stuff i didnt even know hoarfrost crystals were real
I never knew this at all.But thanks to you i am going to build these
cool. im trying the preserving the snowflake one. hope it works =D
i made it and the next i went to the forest and found some tracks so i did it and they were exactly the same
i tryed this last week and it really worked! its worth it
We’re going for it in NH on Jan. 15th. It’s 7 degrees outside and we found a hotplate. Now we a branch and rope and we are all set.
When Old Man Winter bares his cold, sharp icicle fangs, don't turn into an indoor flake. Bite back! Here's how to sink your teeth into winter and walk away with a few cool souvenirs."
At my school we did practically the same thing except we used Pringles cans. THey work just the same and all you have to do is cut a hole in the can add plastic wrap and wait a while.
This is a great idea. The solar cooker for a hot dog needs direct sunlight (no shade trees) and the outside temperature needs to be above 94 degrees Farenheit to cook the hotdog in about fifteen minutes or so ( usually with a Heat index of over 107 degrees Farenheit)– about the same temperature as cooking an egg on a cement sidewalk which does not have shade trees around. This is a great idea as a school science fair project. It’s a way to have a hot, cooked meal using absolutely no matches or charcoal.

i was just wondering how long it will take to cook the hot dog and how to build it
Looks easy, but hard! I guess it will probably explode!
This hot dog cooker is awesome I’m sooo using this for my project. Hope I get an A+.
If you make the uprights and somehow the skuer bigger, you can cook other stuff. This is a great idea. Where did you get it at?
This idea is swell. I tried it at home with my fam. We all enjoyed the hotdogs.
why didn’t someone tell me that before it would have saved me some time i love hot dogs
And so I was dreaming I was being attack by a monster in the first place.
that is cool my 8th grade class is do it in science it is alsome
=) Hey i really think this is a great idea we are goin to do dis as a science fair project but one of our team member doent want 2
hey this idea is craaaazzzzyyyy n i love it!!! hahahahaha xD
Wow….this would have been helpful!!! The dimensions were not included in the print instructions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We made one but it was too small and took way too long to cook the hot dog!
If you curve some aluminum foil just right, you can cook hot dogs with the sun's heat.
i play ultimate frisbee and its really fun
You can also play man-hunt infection at night with flashlights, where one person tags another, and they both are infected, the person tagging and the one being tagged. This continues, and eventually everyone is infected. There is nothing cooler on a campout when you are a child, than running at each other in the dark with flashlights, trust me!
when I played ultimate my troop called it ultimate frizbee it is a lot of fun!
I am a girl, but I love outdoor games. I really like kickball and ultimate, but capture the flag is pretty awesome too. Soon I will have a birthday and I will use your ideas. Thank you Boys Life!!
Capture the flag, red rover, and tackle football. with touch football it’s too easy to get “tackled.” Plus tackle football is 5x more manly.
we play capture the flag in the dark!we make it even harder and hide the flag!
If you van find a big soft field, tackle football is fun too.
Ultimate frisbee is our unit in P.E. I love it!
My troop leader says to not run in the campsite. So we would tell our spl where we are going(usually the nearest flat clear site) and we would have fun there.
if your leader is like that, then he shouldn’t be leader.
I think you should include rules for capture the flag. A scout trip is always better with a good capture the flag match
Track and football are great games to play if you can find an open field or empty campsite.
when my pack has nothing to do,we play touch football. But my friends love soccer to o,but all of them are great.
they are good but not as good as capture the flag my troop always finds a feild and when it gets dark we use glowsticks for flags
My troop usually camps out on a mountain so all we can do is polish boxing and capture the flag but those are good games
Its ultimate FRISBIE last I heard. But it is a fun game.Trust me I have plaayed it.
hey dragon player that baseball frisbee idea is good i’ll try it… i just tryed it it is awsome good thinking
Ok, uuuuh… My troop plays football at meetings and at campouts all the time.
And I’m sure there are other troops that do as well, so why is everyone acting like this is some awesome new idea?
When my troop goes camping we always play football and ultimate frisbee great games for whne you have nothing to do
What about games that encourage scouts working together for a common goal? I really like these kinds. It helps up learn how to work together and work on scout spirit. We learned a new one last night where 4 people hold hands in the middle. The rest of the troop or patrol are in a circle around them and use a ball to toss at the #1 scout of the 4. They can not let go hands and only the #1 scout is the goal so the 2,3, and 4 can act as a shield but must hold hands. If #1 is tagged he goes to the circle and the one in the circle who hit #1 with the ball becomes #4 and 2 and 3 move up to be #1 and # 2. This is a great game for any age scout.
I must admit that these are great games. I`ve done all of them except track. My favorite was touch football.
I like ultimate it is cool and kickball is awesome but I like Baseball frisbee better
its like baseball but with a frisbee the pitcher throws the disc to the thrower (batter)
if it is not a good throw it counts as a ball ( the thrower can move of the plate) if it
is a good throw the thrower tries to catch it if they touch it and miss their out if they
catch it they have to throw it and than run around the bases
These are great games I really like touch football. If you don’t have a football you can wrap toilet paper with duck tape.
those are pretty good outdoor games. Ultimate Rocks!
I just love does outdoor games. They just are wonderful games
Got some free time during a camp-out? Don't hide in your tent. Get out and play!
cant do this where I live… too cold
This was a great project I did with a group of kids. I used green and yellow Christmas tree lights instead of the LED, which still worked well. Also, you only need a AA battery if you use the Christmas tree light. This might make finding supplies much easier.
oh yea, and the led light can be stripped out of an electrical appliance that is no longer working. more recycling!
>To crack the fireflies’ code, watch a female in the grass answer a flying male’s signal.
Um, sure. If I could find a female in the grass, I doubt I’d be building firefly lanterns.
I want to make this but I have to wait till next spring.
Where do you get the wires and led light?
Also do the males just fly in and stay there if you use the led light or do you need to like run over and put them in?
please reply
That is really sweet, except for 1 thing. Where are you going to get two six-foot lengths of insulated copper wire?
Good idea compared with using a net. I used to go firefly catching and half the fireflies I caught would fall out of the net and die.
I dont know what I would do without Boy’s Life!!!!
Hey, BTSR in texas is a great place for fire fly catching during summer! I almost swollowed a couple ’cause they were swarming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :^)
Sounds cool. But, wouldn’t the lantern act like a strobe light, seeing as how fireflies flash their lights rather than run them steadily? And 40 fireflies? Wouldn’t it take a long time to catch them?
Why can’t you just catch fireflies and stick them in a jar with air holes?
too bad there’s no fireflies where I live.
Where do they live anyway?
Want a natural nightlight? Catch some fireflies and make a firefly lantern. Here's how.
One thing to also mention is climate and altitude . They can effect your performance in a negative way if your not accustom to extreme conditions. Buffalo Trails is mile-high + , very dry and steep ! This was my backyard as a boy and I considered it a heavenly place to be at ! Thanks for you web site !
I wish i had used this at Philmont. If you guys go to Philmont us this. TRUST ME, I wish I had. Does anyone know who won the ipad? PLEASE RESPOND I AM DESPERATE TO KNOW!!!!!!!
Well I will surly use these tips because I really like to hike
One way to keep a steady and enduring pace while hiking either a ten mile hike or a twenty mile hike is to keep each individual hikers favorite song which maintains a sixty beat per minute musical meter (like Row, Row, Row Your Boat Gently Down the Stream and so on) and advance each hiking step to one beat of the song for the entire length of the hike–the favorite song doesn’t have to be sung out loud, but if the song is maintained for the entire hike, the hiking pace is steady, constant and the hiker usually enjoys the hike more than a grudgingly here we go again on a “ten mile hike or twenty mile endurance hike”.
WOW thanks we went hikeinhg in the smoky mountains and these were really useful.
im going on a back packing trip with my troop this summer in new mexico. im really happy i saw this as im starting to work out for our trip ahead. I hope this tip pays off this summer
A good thing to do before trips to philmont or any other place is to do shake downs. I am going to isle royale this summer and we have 6 shake downs where you can get a good pace.
and before a trip you should do some strength traing like going out for a 45 minute run
though hiking boots are good 4 multi day hikes. 4 short 7 mile day hikes in good wheather i prefer to use my mizuno running shoes they provide support for me plus i have strong ankels and they are comfortable.
Don’t drink soda for two or three days before the hike, it helps prevent cramps. Also, when you begin to breath hard try breathing in through your nose and out your mouth.
Good advice! Regular exercise before hiking helps too. Step exercises help me.
I am going to philmont in a year these are good tips I can start practiceing and get really good at
Please do an article on hiking boots. What’s good and what’s bad.
I had just came back from philmont last week and if this article came out sooner it would of really helped me. It was really strenous trying to cope with the eelevation. One day when i was there we hiked 15 miles. It was a lot of work but really fun. Philmont is the best.If you have the chance to go you should do it.Thanks!
-PhilmontGuy22
The rest step really works. My boss guides trips in addition to his normal day job, and when he goes to Denali he teaches everyone the rest step. Everyone gets to the top, and the rest step is really what saves them.
why didn’t they have this site before. I just went to buffalo trails for my first year and boys always get tired so quickly. A hint to new patrol leaders read this and tell your patrol so they might complane less
I am going to Grand Canyon in a week these will help
a
Egad! Never, ever step over a log on a trail. I don’t know how the rattlesnakes at Philmont behave, but if you step over a log down South you’re apt to step onto a water moccasin. It won’t be pleasant for either of you.
You’ve provided some very good and useful advice here. I’ve been around Scouting for years. I earned Eagle Scout in about 1965. I hiked alot at Camp Geiger near St. Joseph, MO. I really appreciate my experience as a member of Tribe of Mic-O-Say. My first year at Camp Geiger, my Mom bought me a new pair of boots that weren’t broken in. I know she meant well, but I sure got a lot of blisters. Make sure your boots fit well and are well broken in before you go to camp or on a long hike, and follow the advice provided here. Mr. Haviland knows what he’s talking about!
This is really useful! I am going to Philmont next year, and am proud to say my crew and I are dong these things. Thanks, BL!
The key to a smooth hike: setting the right pace. Here's how to find it.
As a part of bicycle maintenance: How many people are required to purchase a bicycle’s license tag from their respective State’s Deparment of Motor Vehicles as a bicycle registration? Some people are required to register their bicycles with their respective states by requiring the bicycle owner to purchase a bicycle license tag similar to the license tags that are required for motorcycles, mopeds, automobiles, passenger buses, recreational sailboats and recreational motor boats, and commercial trucks.
Good info. I have a very expensive bike and i need to know how to maintain it.
There’s alot of tools and liquid stuff that I don’t really have.
Why does the inner tube blow and why is it so hard to find the replacement inner tubes?
how do u fix your bikes tire with a dollar when its poped
No, hosing then drying quickly will not rust it, especially if you use oil around the easily rustable areas. (brake locks, pedals, etc.)
my aunt who races bikes said its not very good to use wd40 on you bike. but you don’t have to belive what she says if you don’t want to (but I would)
Maintaining your bike is your responsibility, both for your safety and that of the friends you ride with. Luckily, tuning up your bike isn't as hard as it might seem when you first try. Here's how to maintain some of the components on your bike.
I love fishing with my grandpa and I’ll bet he will love this tip cause he loves nature and tries to make the fish feel no pain at all.
i just cought a 17 pound king on lake Ontario yesterday!!!
I think that these suggesttions are only for beginners really, I go fishing quite often, but, I would not follow these rules, but that is just my opinion.
Instead of using gloves, just wet your hands.Circle hooks also help because it hooks on the side of the mouth.
one kind of fish buries and starves itself if you release it
this is about sport fishing isnt it for eagle scout i need to know how to prepare it to eat
A tip for fishing is even if you don’t catch anything have fun.
If the hook gets caught in the gills or eye and the chance of survival is low, break the fish’s neck. If you do it right, it is a quick and un-painful way to put it out of it’s misery.
I have only caught 4 fish but I still like it a lot anway.
thats cool……….. i caught a 7 pound fish one time and it loocked like it should of been like 25 pounds….
I love fishing!!!
I always catsh and release.
The biggest fish i ever caught was an 18 inch largemouth bass!
(I’ve also caught some 14-16in. pickerel)
awesome! i love thispage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it kinda hard to get it out of the eye trust me on this one guy
you’ll have kill the fish
what if you pay 6.50 for your fishing lure nobody would do that.
fishing is fun. i have never kept a fish that i have caught, but i have only caght seven fish i think and they were all 3 – 4 inch bluegill
I been fishing at Lake Ontario for 3 years now and have only caught 9 fish.
If you dull the tips enoughf to not seriously injur the fish you wouldn`t catch any thing!!!!!
i think they need to tell you how to hold the fish without its gills cutting you.
whats the easiest way to catch a fish?
Have some one throw it at you
fishin is my favorite hobbey im down at the pond at least twice a day
The last time i went fishing my great grandmother was hooked in the thumb, but i caught baby bass and a normal bass.
Fishing is great I love to fish rivers lakes ect. sometimes its easy to get the hook out with your hand but sometimes if its hard don’t hesitate use a tool
wearing gloves can still remove the slime. so that you dont remove the slime you need wet hands. if you are affrade to touch them then wear gloves that have been soaked in water.
When you catch a fish always be gentle, and don’t hook yourself!
Use gloves so u do not remove the slime , it is the fishes way of protecting its self from harmful parasites . If u don’t have gloves get your hands wet before handling fish please.
another good way to get hold of a fish:
use a washcloth/ something like it to grip it
if u’re in a lake, gently pull the fish back n forth till it swims away. and don’t toss it in the water; put it in the water gently.
In the title of the passage, it doesn’t say if the tips will work for all fish species or for just one species.
actually dont use gloves, just make your hands wet it doesnt take the fishes slime away from it
If you want to now how to hold a fish without getting hurt then hold your thumb and your finger on the fishes mouth.
Here are a few tips for ensuring the fish you catch have the best chance of survival.
yeah i’ve seen stuff like that… for those of you who built it that does it work?
I pictured a big old metal mailbox with coals and a shelf – whew…it looks complicated for this Scout!
It would be nice to see clearer photos of the stove, the dark background does not aid in viewing a black stove! Nice concept!
very useful information! it’s good to know that mailboxes offer something useful for a change!! other than recipients of bills and more bills..
that cheap to make compared to other stoves ive made
This is really cool,I would like to build this.
I think I will try to make it and see how well it works
The Mailbox would be hard to get, but that is awesome.
im workin on building a much simpler version that requires only two mailboxes and some sheet metal.
I’ve made one of these before, it actually worked pretty well.
galvanized screen: BAD idea. when sufficiently hot, it will release zinc fumes and make you ill.
it awsome me and my dad made it. i finished it today, im dying to cook in it.nice idea.Do you think you could post some of your troops recipies on here
This is the greatest project i have ever seen. I really had a fun time getting to make this mailbox stove. =0
Sweet idea! I think this would be a great summer prodject for use in the fall when it gets more windy and fires are allowed in most areas.
I need help with step 17. I don’t get which way the sheet of metal goes in.
wow i love it i can’t wait to start!!!!thanx for the instructions
Here it says to use galvanized screen. When heated it can release some chemicals that you don’t want on your food or to be breathing in. I don’t know how hot this can get, but its better safe than sorry.
Impressive invention!! Troop 33 is really on the ball. Are there any other inventions they’ve done? How about a video to purchase with not so close-up photos? Thanks for the instructions..really cool!
It is easier than it looks. Using 2 old mailboxes (as our troop did) is the way to go. Why buy new when you can recycle. There were a couple of holes in our old mailboxes which did not affect performance, they added character. THANKS! How about some recipes?
Wow! That’s a great ideah that would make camp cooking easier!
It would be great if Boys Life would print these and a bunch of recipes in book form.
Thanks. I’ve been waiting months for the instructions to make this. I’m dying to get started.
It’s too bad these aren’t sold in stores. I would buy 2 of them; one for my troop and the other for my family and me!
It seems easier to arc wield the seems, than to use heat 4000 jamex!
This is so cool. Thanks for posting this. i can’t wait to make one.
Looking for a unique and fun way to cook for your troop? Do what this North Carolina troop does: Cook in a mailbox.
I know how to do this, but I need a map to do it for 2nd class. Anyone know where I can find one.
If you still need a map you can search the local scout store camping section.
A good Sylvan orienteering compass is an outdoorsman essential tool to keep a person oriented when walking in deep woods such as a National Forest that has hundreds of acres and miles of trees in a Forest.
Great stuff!!! I wish you could make the picture bigger or download it though. Then i could teach my troop the basics easier.
Mostly good advice, but near the bottom where it ways you should add 6 degrees, it should say you SUBTRACT 6 degrees, to get a field bearing, based on the diagram shown.
This is some really helpful advice that really helped me on my first hike. It helped us find which direction we were going on the map.
I wanna go backpackin’ with my family (except ONE of my sisters who is 19 and is in Ohio)! This’ll be helpful for navigating our way around when we DO go backpacking.
Cool! I hope I don’t halfta go on one in a while… that’s kinda hard to remember all that stuff! Nevertheless, I wanna go on one.
I am going on a camp out and this will help me a lot. Thanks
In the interest of keeping it simple scout, KISS:
“Red in the Shed and follow Fred” Fred is your direction of travel, Red is the North pointing end of the needle and Shed is the hash marks signifying zero degrees, North, on the movable dial.
Get the most out of your orienteering tools by learning how best to use them.
My troop whent down to gettysburgh and did the trail we made a week out of it did the trail one day, the museam the next and went sight seeing the other it was great we used a troop from gettysburgs cabin and the weather was perfect we didnt need a tent we just slept under the trees it was great
The Historic National Road offers mile after mile of plenty of scenic hiking over mountains and across rolling hills.
The “Ole Chisolm Trail” of Texas offers many miles of hiking across the southwest and the state of Texas. It can’t be hiked without a canteen handy to quench a hiker’s thirst.
I love boyscouts because I get to do all sourts of cool stuff. It is so much fun when you get to earn all of the badges. You also get to go on awsome trips and do fun activites and games. You also get to do stuff with your pack, den and your family.
It is really fun when you win a contest. It is also fun when there are alot of people yo-u do know and it is also fun when you get to know new people that you never met be- fore.
REMEMBER YOUNG SCOUTS WHEN YOU ARE LOST DO NOT SCREAM OR USE YOUR VOICE TO BE FOUND CARRY A WESLEY AND YOU MIGHT BE FOUND BECAUSE YOUR WESLEY IS LOUDER THAN YOUR VOICE
I went to Grand Canyon National Park this past August.
I’m not a boy but I loved the historical trial descriptions. I had no idea most of these existed. Thanks!
the powell plateau is aesome!!!!(I hiked it over spring break.)
By exploring a historical trail, hikers can follow in the footsteps of the trailblazers who carved their own paths through the American wilderness.
Portage: pronounced por-táge — a French-Canadian verb. Loosely translated, it means to wear a canoe on your head while simultaneously hiking through the mud. In the southern United States, the word portage is a descriptor generally taken to mean a canoe does not make a very good hat.
How do you know how to read the difficulty of a river to know that it would be best to portage around a difficult skill level of canoeing that is above a person’s own skill level? How do you portage a canoe and carry along a person’s own backpack and backpacking equipment?
It helps if you have a PFD that has padding around the back of your neck, the canoe can rest on it and it will be more comfortable, also if you have a pack on it makes it a lot easier to balance the canoe.
sweet! also when setting the canoe back down at the end of the portage, walk right into the water so the canoe doesn’t have to go right down to the ground. its easier.
it was cool how lo learn how to do that cause i came on this web site for a project and i got a 85% on it thanks for who did this web site.=)
You will know you have portaging down when you run the portage one way with a canoe and Duluth pack on your back and then return carrying a strangers canoe to help them out. Of course I was 18 the last time I did it!
Phew! It was nice knowing that the way that we usually do it is not as safe as it is this way! Thanks for saving us!
I always thought the portaging of the canoe was hard. Thanks for the tip!
I know nothing about these calls no matter how hard I try I cant remember them I love this article!!!!
2 things:
When you hear rock, do NOT look up to see if anything is falling. Instead, stand as close to the rock as possible, In hope that the rock bounces against the face. Do NOT go far from the face- if it bounces, u may be hit.
Also, some climbers will say “take” instead of tension and up rope.
well there are a few more calls than that but that’s pretty much it. Anybody heard of “hold”, “send it up”, “tie in”, or “pocket”? Probably not, but ya those are calls too.
that is not all the calls there is also down and locked which means you check the carabiner. you also shout helmet and slap your helmet and yell gloves and show your gloves
Hey Anonymous, when no one brakes the rope you either have serious injuries or die.
In scouts we are going on a climbing outing. I told my scout master about this site and now he will use the info when we go climbing! Thanks, Boys Life!
When climbing or rappelling, it's very important for the person on the rock to communicate well with his belayer. To do this, they use "calls." Here are some of the generally accepted signals for belaying climbers and rappellers.

I have found geocaches on two continents and in two countries and 12 states. It is an awesome hobby and you can do it anywhere, literally!
if you have a iphone i read that you can buy a $10 geocashing app
They should have a geocaching merit badge.
they do have a geocashing merit badge
They do
I have it. Got it at Merit badge extravaganza. less than one day. now I am really in to it.
I was geocaching befor i heard of this website. It kind of dosn’t obey the rule of leave no trace. It is realy fun.
PS: You dont need a GPS to geocache. I don’t have one
It might seem that geocaching violates the Leave No Trace statement of scouting, but not if you follow the rule “Cache In, Trash Out” rule.
In the end, Leave no Trace is really about leaving the environment better than we found it.
If you don’t have a gps you shoud go to R.E.I. they have a secion of geocaching
to burgerholic and Jman, you can buy a GPS at any Target, Walmart, and yes camping stores like REI
to sweatmaster: it WOULD be a cool idea, but you cant leave food as a trinket, it probably wouldnt fit in the cache anyways.
its sort of hard when you dont have a gps
i wonder if freeze dried ice cream would make a good trinket…..
When I went geocashindg i found a cansas coin
My family loves to go geocaching. We can get the kids outdoors and away from video games and the tv.
I love to geocache with my family
You can also use programs such as google to find geocaches. That’s actually how I found my first two caches.
id like to hunt it!!
i love geocaching
I have cash not even a 5 min. walk from my house and it is in an army amo box!
Sometimes, global positioning systems locators are too precise and too exact. Some ways of describing a location are archaic when using a map, compass and land features (topography) to locate a given treasure. Sometimes, coordinates don’t give reference to intermittant streams or directions such as turn left at the field stone well and go straight for the large hickory tree which is growing near the blackberry plants.
We’ve been geocaching since March of 2005 and currently have found over 2,700 geocaches and hidden 203 for others to find. My family and I enjoy geocaches that involve either hiking or visiting local parks the most. One of the toughest that I’ve found involved a nine mile roundtrip hike along the Youghigheny River in Western Maryland. The hike was easy until the last half mile which involved either bushwhacking through VERY dense foliage along the rive or boulder hopping in the river.
What a GREAT day!

Gecaches are available through the following websites:
http://www.geocaching.com
http://www.navicache.com
http://www.terracaching.com
The largest website by far is http://www.geocaching.com with 861,388 active geocaches around the world. In the last 7 days, there have been 793,526 new logs written by 95,805 account holders.
As to hunting for geocaches without a GPSr, it can be done but is a little harder than geocaching with one. We actually geocached for three months without a GPSr and found around fifty geocaches. Most were urban (city) hides that we found by zooming in on the maps as far as we could and then using the description in the cache page and the hints provided when needed.
If you have any general questions about geocaching please feel free to ask here in this thread or send me an email via the geocaching website. Type in my profile name and then click on send a message.
Happy Caching!

WHERE ARE THE COORDINATES FOR THE BSA HUNT !!!!!!!
I would LOVE to do that!!!
I LOVE BOYS LIFE
Go to your council and get the coordinates from them, If you don’t have a Global Positioning Unit (GPS) then ask to borrow one from a good friend, or look it up on Google Earth.
it is sooooo fun you just go onto a geocache website and find the coordinates close to whre you live or where you are going on a trip! its really easy and really fun
on the main geocaching website i geocache all the time
Where are the coordinates?
Where are the coordinates released?
where do you get the coordinates????????????????? AAAUUUGGGHHHHHH
Geocaching is fun and you don’t really need a GPS. It makes it easier to use a GPS but instead you can use relative location to find the caches.
geocacheing is so fun, ive found all sorts of caches from rocks shaped as abraham lincoln to a magazine
I dont have a gps is there a way to do it with out one
I’ve heard about geocashing in a fiction book, so
i didn’t know it was real, i want to try
i’ve been geocaching for a long time andi’ve found lots of caches
I want to go geocaching but I don’t have a GPS.
