Rock climbing at the BSA’s newest high-adventure base, the Summit Bechtel Reserve, is going to be awesome. Venturing Crew 5.14 from Oley, Pa., has already experienced it first hand.
The series is truly top-notch, the final pages of Inheritance however, let us leave it at depressing.
I have gotten an amazing sense of gratification from reading this series.
Best-selling author Christopher Paolini answered questions from Boys' Life magazine readers in a live webcast on Dec. 12, 2011.
Awesome adventure. I like that you said your backpack becomes like part of your body…. I agree – sometimes I leave mine on when I am just taking a short break. Long distance hiking is a blast! I am a school teacher – you really don’t have to miss that much school – anyway you were hiking with your Dad so your educational responsibilities still had adult guidance as well. BRAVO!
I hiked the Dragons Tooth section last October. It was a difficult section, very slow hiking through there.
Honk! Honk! that is our venturing crew word for WOW and AMAZING and KEEP GOING! One of our crew members (247 in VA) completed the trail this year…she left two days after graduating high school…..our crew loves to back pack. What a great accomplishment for you and your Dad. A trip of a lifetime. Thanks for sharing…..
I did 110 miles in Cherokee NF along TN NC border in 10 days many years ago when I was 13. This kid is an inspiration. Great Job!
That is so awesome, what a cool time with your dad. I hope you home schooled along the way, that would be even cooler. School lessons under the trees. Good for you..
I was heading SOBO and we crossed pathes at a shelter in late July. Congratulations to Chili and Pepper.
As a father (and former scout) I know how proud your dad is of you. This is an experience you’ll always look back on and enjoy. Hiking the AT is an accomplishment very few people get to realize and now you can count yourself among some of the most driven and grounded people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.
I’m going to assume you are or were home schooled which your dad most likely continued on the trail in the best class room ever.
You’re an inspiration, Cameron. Be proud of yourself. Live well.
Pepper and Chile, You guys rock. So proud of you and best of luck on the Pacific Crest Trail this summer.
I met these two when I was hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2010. He’s such a great kid with an awesome father. Congratulations Chili and Pepper!
How did you go to school? Or, manage missing so much of school?
After walking more than 2,100 miles over six months, Cameron Pendleton and his father made it to Maine and completed the entire Appalachian Trail. Listen as Cameron reflects on his accomplishment.
Wow, you guys did it! that was an amazing climb. I am exciteed to climb that.
What an amazing adventure! I can’t wait to read more in Boys’ Life Magazine.
WOW that looks really hard and fun!!!!!!! Great job High Venture Crew.
After a tent-rattling storm, a Venturing crew climbs through the dead of night up super-steep slopes and eventually tackles all that Mount Shasta has to offer.
this looks alot like hockey minus the ice and the danger of being ran in too
The sport of hurling is a big deal in Ireland. It's also a big deal to Boy Scouts in Milwaukee, Wis. The Milwaukee Hurling Club gave the Scouts a chance to participate in a sport they call "the fastest game on grass."
I think its awsome that the boy scouts are fighting for a cure to end diabetes
keep up the great work! lets hear it for those who stand up and fight for a cure!
Awesome! Way to go to the 4 Boy Scouts and others for fighting for a cure.
Four Boy Scouts with type 1 diabetes joined about 150 kids from across the country in Washington, D.C., last summer to lobby their congressmen for financial support for research for better treatments and, someday, a cure for the disease.
What started as a single tree planted in front of the BSA national office in Irving, Texas, has now finished with 100,000 trees planted in an area of Montana that's now known as the Boy Scouts of America Centennial Forest.
Boyslife is a fun way to lern how to do stuf out in the forest
Colorado Scouts use GPS and ham-radio skills to complete a challenging navigation course.
This special video edition of Stuff We Like shows you a real trail lifesaver.
He’s Crazy!!! I would not let it go just like that!!!
cool snake i want to know too whats the white snakes name,it looks too cool.
Please tell us more about the white snake. I traveled to the National Zoo and the Baltimore Aquarium to find out what it is. A gentleman at the aquarium thought it was a lucite retickulated python. But I could not find one on the internet.
Thank you.
Yes, please tell us what kind of snake that is on page 14!!!
i LOOVE snakes. when i went to get the mail, and saw my little brothers boys life magazine had a snake on he cover, i didn’t even give it to him! i read the article first! you are so awesome! thats what i want to do when i grow up!
Please tell us what kind of snake is the white one in the photo on page 14 of the current magazine
Thanks!
In this video, biologist Shawn Heflick tells us about the anaconda, one of his favorite snakes.
I just checked my local listings for the outdoor channel at the times listed. I don’t see it. Is the show still on?
I THINK IT WOULD BE VERY INTERESTING. I MIGHT JUST GO AHEAD, JUMP IN MY CHAIR AND WATCH IT!
I think BL should see there is sufficient interest in offering the shows online, even if for a fee, or perhaps they can find a sponsor (paging ‘Cabelas’). Not everyone gets OLN, so some form of online viewing would be beneficial.
This needs to be broadcast on a more readily available channel. Outdoor channel has accessability problems.
In my opinion the show is well done, and also motivating.
They should make a real BSA Channel, not just a show.
I think this program is great, but I think that just using national camps doesn’t show what happens at the small camps, that we have all over the place and witch more boys go to other than national camps. These camps are just as structred as the big camps and most of the time more fun as well.
I feel as do others that it should be on more channels than just the outdoor channel. I know that some of the DE’s have DVD of these shows I think everyone should be able to have these in there libary
I would love to know where the location of the show that appeared on television 8 am central time took place. The scenery was beautiful! The show told about a sprained ankle and using a triangular bandage to help a sprain until getting back to the camp site to remove shoe and allow swelling to go down. We couldn’t see which state that was located in, and we have a guessing game up in the air! lol Thanks, the show is very interesting.
I think they should make an entire boyscout channel with a scouts in action series, a Pedro cartoon and a pee wee cartoon
Sometimes you can ask to recieve a particular chanel a la carte’. If you dont get the outdoors channel you might try acking your service provider to add it to your list. I think that channel is one of those channels. Lots of good stuff on that channel.
Unfortunately, we don’t get the outdoor channel in our area. I’d love to see it on you tube or even viewable on the Outdoor Channel website. I realize this is a start but I don’t know how well received it will be if much of your potential viewership can’t receive the programming. I hope that is taken into account when deciding whether to continue the program or not when the time comes.
Loved seeing last saturdays airing wish the wed airings would change to a better time and day though.
A few minutes of the show can be seen on this part of the Outdoor Channel website:
http://www.outdoorchannel.com/Shows/ScoutingForAdventure.aspx
I do not care what channel it’s on, I am just glad that there is at least one that still thinks enough of the scouts to aire a positive show about them. I am sure thay will eventually be available through other media. In the mean time find someone who has the Outdoor channel and ask them to copy it.
As a BSA District Executive, I am very pleased with this production. I will be recording the entire series. I am also impressed with the timing of BL’s release of this show. I would be interested in seeing the impact it has in fall recruitment. Way to go BL! Pedro delivers!
Would love to see it on YouTube or Discovery. Would be really great if it was shown online as well on the Outdoor Channel. Also, would love to be able to show the shows on DVD.
It’s great they offer this new show. However, most people can’t get the Outdoor channel at home unless you pay through the nose for it. Why not make it available online? Or via DVD.
Hey! PodCasts sounds like a great idea. short segments lots of information, entertaining and informative. That’s the ticket!
Who has the outdoor channel?
Everything ends up on U-tube. I guess thats when I’ll pop my popcorn.
To: the Scouter that dubs it. please do a good job.
sach
Unbelievable! Finally, the BSA puts us out there where people can see the amazing things that we do, and people are complaining. I think this is a great “step” in the right direction. I think this is the start of something that can get bigger and better. Thank you “Boy’s Life.”
have been a schout for 5 years even i lern a thing or 2
Hello,
The rare but always present “negative comment” about being on the same page & channel.
Do You think this is free??
What do you think the cost might be on an everyday channel? It is a starting point, and i am sure BSA will look into getting these shows available on another platform (if the contract permits!!) remember you have to crawl before you can walk muchless run.
Check out the Outdoor Channel’s Website. They have a place to watch their shows online. I don’t know for sure if the Scout show will be on there–but it’s worth watching for! Their website is: http://www.outdoorchannel.com/tv/
Do you believe this would draw more scouts in? What if you take it to another level like sports have and had the Boy Scouts of America was established, by competitive outdoor adventures, e are losing so many scouts each year because they believe its a school after school and sometimes they go camping and those skills will no longer be used. hen I grew up in scouting what drove me to meetings just like many scouts in my troop was the sense of adventure and rival troops in the area where we were going to compete twice a year at Burr oak, Camporees, and klondikes. I am no longer it that area because the Military has moved me from there. In the location I am in now they had a Camporee with the historical theme, and only a gateway competition, and next year they are going to incorporate cub scouts into it. Please shed some light, I love scouting, and I love the traditions of scouting. Are we caught up in the Money and profit scouting makes or the lifes that we can mold and change? I am sorry for this soap box on the wonderful Scouting show forum, I am only one opinion, but if u look at the decline in 10 years it is at 37% even though they say at all the meetings I goto that scouting is doing good. Thank you, take care and please keep scouting!
My cable provider, only offers this channel at a higher tier, which equates to more money from me to them. I can not justify the cost. YOUTUBE is a great alternative and possibly put them on this site as podcasts. This would allow untis to use them as a recruiting tool. IMHO
Why dont you guys just use public broadcasting its not like this is gonna make up for not selling cookies!
Sounds like a great show. I do not get the Outdoor Channel. Is there anyway the videos can be made available? Online, DVD, for sale, free????
We would love to see them
Thanks, h2otgo
I WOULD LOVE TO WATCH THIS TELEVISION PRESENTATION SPONSERED BY BOY’S LIFE BUT UNFORTUNTLY I CAN NOT. IN THIS TOUGH ECONOMIC TIME IN OUR GREAT COUNTRY I MUST TAKE THE 9TH POINT OF THE SCOUT OATH EVEN CLOSER TO HEART AND MANAGE MY MONEY SO THE $18.00 THAT TIME WARNER CABLE WANT FOR E TO RECEIVE THIS CHANNEL IS JUST NOT POSSIABLE. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THAT AFTER THE SHOW IS BROADCAST ON TELEVISION THE SHOW BE AVAILIABLE ON LINE EITHER ON THE NATIONAL COUNCIL WEBSITE, BOYSLIFE WEBSITE OR YOUTUBE. I HOPE YOU TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE MANY PROUD AMERICAN SCOUTERS AND MAKE THIS VEIWABLE TO USE IN SOME OTHER FORMAT. AS ALWAYS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GEETING THE SCOUTING MESSAGE OUT TO THE WORLD
What a great showcase for Scouting. Too bad it is on the Outdoor Channel which is a premium channel that I don’t get. We have Verizon FiOS and the Outdoor costs a bundle. My suggestion would be for National to get these shows on another channel (e.g., Discovery or Nat Geo) or up on YouTube, and offer the series on DVDs for wider distribution.
In my humble opinion, if you want the “reintroduce America to the real BSA, you will need to get wider distribution for this show.
Very good program. However, given the times it is being shown, it will not be seen by many in the Western Time zone.
Yes, the Outdoor Channel is not widely available in our Comcast service area near San Francisco, except on pricey Premium Digital Channels. None of our Scouts can access it in our city. Scouts and Scouting’s image can only be furthered by making its fun, adventures, and good work known to the masses who can afford to watch this program. Bring it down to standard TV reception that all can access!
If you don’t have the channel maybe you can watch them online. If you go to the OutdoorChannel website, on the top menu click “Shows”. On that page, scroll down in the box (its alphabetical) and click “Scouting For Adventure” to go to the show’s page.
How about making it available for purchase through iTunes? People won’t have to subscribe to OLN, but can still purchase the program.
Hello “Boys life” do you get the idea yet? You may have a wonderful program but if we are not all on the same page or “the same channel” it’s not going to go very far, is it.
Not fair I don’t have the channel! I whish i could show this to my new scouts, I wonder if we could buy these my Troop would definatly buy them.
8)
: lol:
I equally am excited about this series and my Comcast provider only allows for this as an add-on channel adove and beyond Digital Premium package that I pay monthly. I would strongly encoruage that we look at providing this via some other means. Awesome idea but don’t hide this stuff.
I believe that our local cable distributor does not carry the Outdoor Channel. Perhaps it could also be distributed to our target audience..scout-age youth.. via popular children’s network such as Disney and Nicklelodian networks.
WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS! However we don’t have this channel where I live. Maybe check with the Discovery Channel to see if they would be interested in showing this. My son loves being a scout, but it’s hard to recruit new kids these days. If we could have some visuals to show kids they may be more excited about joining!!
Very, very COOL! Thanks BSA for taking Scouting to another level!
We don’t get the Outdoor Channel, since it’s on a pricey-er tier via cable and we’re thrifty scouts
Looks like the Outdoor Channel offers shows on its www site. Could BSA make sure we have access to the show via their site, or perhaps via iTunes?
I would think charging $$ for the shows would be counter-productive to the objective of getting the word out! We’ll definitely be able to better promote Scouting that way.
I have the same trouble as NL. DirecTV carries Outdoor Channel as an extra add on that I’m not sure I want to pay extra for. I wish they would have asked scout leaders before choosing a network. Maximum Adventure Network (MAN) would probably have jumped on the opportunity to get a new show with a ready made audience. It is a great new channel that comes with my current DirecTV package.
Same as Above, we can’t get the channel either. But the show looks great. I have a number of photos i could send to add in.
This is a great thing and a great idea. I really would like my Scouts to see it.
Unfortunately, in our area, the Outdoor Channel is part of a superpremium cable package and we won’t be able to see it.
We don’t get this channel where we live, and I’d love to use these videos for Join Scouting Night as a recruiting tool. Will BSA allow Packs/Troops to purchase these?
Boys' Life brings its Scout adventure stories to The Outdoor Channel television network in the fourth season of "Scouting for Adventure -- Presented by Boys' Life."
duncan metal drifter does not even do the trapeze.
why does my yoyo come up even when i dont tug it up
If the yoyo isnt more than $15.00, then dont buy it. Those cheapo yoyos cant even do the simplest sleeper.
To: everyone that cant do even a sleeper.
Dont get yoyos from wallgreens! Get a duncan metal drifter or a dark magic 2 or any other butterfly yoyos that has metal things on the side.
I just bought a Duncan ProYo. Works great for a begginer like me!
Well I use a Duncan Metal Drifter, and so far its the best yoyo I have ever gotten.
I once got a yoyo from wall greens and it did not work at all
My favorite yoyo is the yomega brain it works so well
i can do that p.s sonic boom Yo-Yos are the best!!!
haha! this dude goes to my church! he taght me how to do some of that stuff personally last summer!
im practiceing looping with a peter fish dominater yoyo
how does the yoyo come back up even though it looks like it stopped spinning? i did that and it wouldnt come back up it was stopped
i am thinking about getting the 0 – YoYoJam Fiesta XX Bryan Figueroa Signature Series #17161 . Wat do u think?!?
when the yo-yo gets to the bottem don,t jerk it just gentle raise your hand up
Is there any place where you can get a yo-yo???? Please someone answer!!!!!!!
I have been throwing yoyo’s since I was a cub (a very long time ago now). The best places to get yoyo’s is online, you have to wait to get it in the mail, but it’s worth it. The best starter yoyo I can think of is a “YOYOfactory velocity.” With it’s adjustable gap, you will go from up and down to spinning “brain twisters” and “buddah’s revenge” like a pro with some practice. Start out with the sleeper, getting it to sleep for 30-60 seconds and you can do nearly any trick.
Major Tip: But a Yoyo with a ball bearing or some sort of floating axle system. Expect to pay over $7 for anything. The cheepo Duncan ($3) or dollar store Yoyos do NOT work well and you WILL be frustrated. Plan on spending $20 or more and you will be set and hooked for LIFE.
Personally I love the Custom brand Axl or Chain Reactor Yoyos. They are lifetime Yoyos unless someone steals yours…
no the BEST beginner yoyo is a duncan avenger you can get one for 10.00 dollars
Thanks guys,but I’m finaly getting a DUNCAN YO-YO off the internet called the FLYING SQUIRREL,it’s a BALL-BEARING AXLE YO-YO for only $10.95
it all started when we had a program at school for a guy called dazzling dave i bought a yo yo from him a few months later we had to move so we put stuff in storage a litte bit later i was digging around and found it i messed with it for a little bit and i was hooked
You can get a yoyo at a lot of places. The yoyos I have gotten were from wallgreens (those yoyos are not very good) but I got the Duncan Metal Drifter from Toys R Us, and it is a very good and responsive yoyo, and it also sleeps alot longer. I got it for $25.99.
I haven’t tryed it so tomorow I’m gonna get a yo-yo and try it
i think i need a better yoyo to do all those tricks.XD with a better yoyo those tricks would be a piece of cake (>’o')>
duncan has the best yoyo’ers and make the best yo
yo
I dont know much about the yoyo he uses, but the best one I found is the Duncan Metal Drifter. Its for sale at Toys R Us.
Nice he’s pretty good. I learned those tricks earlier and this helped clear them up, especially brain twister. Moving on to stuff like split the atom now. Maybe post video on atomic bomb (barrel rolls) that’d be cool.
They take a bit of practice but get easier after you try them for a bit.
i am a yoyo fanatic who lives in california. i use a yoyofactory northstar, skyline, die nasty, popstar, and genesis. my favorite thing to do is freestyle from white buddah. i will be bridging to boyscouts in a couple months. i like your 3a!
Sweet, I too yoyo profesionally, and it’s great to see yoyoing geting this kind of coverage.
That was really cool…..I loved watching the vidoes with my son!
wow that dude has talent.I’m gonna be just like him unless I don’t get my eye poked out by the yo-yo.
Watch as yo-yo expert Alex Curfman demonstrates how to do five yo-yo tricks.

A good little taste of what went on at the Highland Games. Good job!

Every month, you have the chance to ask Pedro questions in the Hitchin’ Rack. But earlier this year, it was PEDRO’S turn to ask YOU a question. Dozens of you made videos answering his question for a chance to win a cool prize. Here are the four winners.
Now when people look at Sean Sterner, all they see is an asterix. Don't use steroids, it's not worth it.
I have to say, this is a great, informing, intresting, and is definitly educational video. I only wish that it identified the shown creatures. It was a litle creepy, but in an intresting way.
Omg i saw that last animal the cuddle fish squid when I scuba dived last week
Steven Haddock is doing his best to illuminate what's in the darkest depths of our oceans. As a marine biologist, he has studied his share of unusual and mysterious organisms. Take a look at some of them in this video.
Ok, for that amount of time, This is astounding!
Once again Those Boy scouts Have Rethought the word “imposible”
I think that can be in the Guiniess Book Of World Records 2012!
This is amazing!I never knew a pack of wolfs could make a 76ft.high baseball filed.I will only say this once.A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.

Next time get a permit. It’s the first rule of caving. Respect the landowner.
Millerton cave is one of the best caving experiences that I have ever had. There truly are a wide variety of challenges and when you add in how slick the rock gets from the water that you get into. Nothing but fun.
Been to this cave a bunch of times. It is great! The video did not show the real sqeeze above the entrance pool since the camera would not fit thru it! There are some really tight ones!
This was a geat event. The pictures and video do not do it justice. The pools at the bottom are large enough to swim through and for an adult it is a very tight squeeze in some places. The boys always have a great time. The pools, holes and cracks carved out of ganite makes this a challenging/fun event for all.
Millerton Cave is the best cave that I’ve ever been to!
THE TIGHT SPACES LOOK EASY TO GET THROE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Watch as California Scouts get down to walk, jump, crawl and even swim through an underground passageway.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll make sure and remember them.
Now try doing 100 of those with a Drill Sargent’s boot in your shoulder blades. thats what I had to do and MUCH more when I was in paratrooper training.
