What’s the best gear for fishing in rivers for catfish?
I really love to use corn, night crawler and mealworms and yes i do thing that mealworms are way better then powerbait
They will both work,but one may work that day but not the next day.
Since two of you are fishing; both of you should be using different items to start. That way you can test the fish more efficiantly. Also, don’t limit yourself to 2 items; usually 5-6 items is a minimum. Talk with your local fishing outlet for suggestions on what’s been hot. They both fish and see more fishermen than anyone so they will be very knowlagable. Personally I always carry: (1) looper jigs (2) dry flies (3) wet flies (4) power bait w/#5 hook and slip sinker (5) Fox spinner w/ salmon egg. Best of luck.
i dont go fishing alot so i dont have that much experience, but whenever my dad and i go we usually try to find crickets. they ought to work on any fish

Live bait will always win out over plastic or other synthetic baits no matter what they flavor them up with. Mealworms are the best for trout. I had not heard of using corn, but I imagine that where I fish the corn would never make it to the trout because of all the darn sunfish. I know there are bass and trout because I get them occasionally, but it is tough to avoid sunnies. Any advice?
I live in a densely populated suburb of DC. When I was in the country in Connecticut, I had pretty good luck with lures and other fake stuff. The fishing down here is not nearly as good and the only bait I’ve caught fish with has been live. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but in my experience the live stuff is a lot grosser but also what to use if you are interested in catching fish.

Dude, don’t use either to catch trout, learn to fly-fish! You will be much more successful.
i really dont know much about trout fishing because in tx the only place you can catch them is in saltwater.
LOL. As far as TX goes, you can catch trout in both fresh and saltwater. I’ve caught plenty in both. However, one thing I like to use when I stream fish for trout is corn. Plain ol’ canned corn on the hook.

Vitamin fortified Wonderbread sandwich bread pieces in about one inch pieces and moistened into a dough bread ball and placed on a fish hook will catch seven inch carp and some of the smaller fresh water pan fishes. The Wonderbread sandwich bread one inch pieces usually really attract small fresh water fish such as carp as well as wild pond ducks when tossed into the fishing pond before casting the fishing hook with the moistened sandwich bread dough ball.
Regular soft whole kernal corn from a grocery store and placed on an Eagle Brand fishhook size #5 will catch carp that measures over fifteen inches from a fresh water river.
mealworms all the way! caught 34 fish in a pond with them!
i have some of those powerbait trout nibbles i dont really like just having one or two on a hook so if i use them(which is rare) i put one on and a worm but i do agree live bait is SO MUCH BETTER! though some plastic and rubber lures are good
live bait will almost always win out over rubber or other artificial lures, but some places the fish are raised on the same thing each day, the trout especially, they jump all over bright colored puff balls with a hook in them.
worms are soooooooooooooooo much better than power bait for just about every thing i fish for. Bass, pike, crappies, and sunfish.

You do not have to use this for just ice fishing, you can set it up on shore with cat fish bait tied to the hook and throw your line out with your hand and Catch catfish
If you cant go ice fishing then you can use it to fish for catfish. there was a comment that was above yours on my comp. screen that said that you could do that.
With these ice-fishing tip-ups, you'll always know when you have a bite.
the easiest way is probably just to pinch the barb down on your hook with some pliers, but if you want the real unbarbed hooks, you can find them at just about any flyshop, since some people commonly use those kind of hooks to tie nymphs & other dry flies. They might not be the right size you’re looking for though.
Pinching down the barbs is the probably the easiest way to accomplish what you are after. Sunfish are full of things that poke your fingers, so you might look into some fishing gloves that add some protection. You might upsize your baits to keep those little nibblers off your hook too. Sunfish do make tasty meals though.
just a random thing im going to say here if you have the new addition of the boyscout handbook in the first aid for a fish hook wound dont follow the derections its wrongyou are not post to yank it out that just tears up your flesh more you cut off the barb then pull it the way it came that doesnt tear you flesh.
Hi Daniel: Get yourself some long nosed or needle nosed pliers and carry them in your tackle box. Like the Gear Guy says you can crimp down the barb to make your hook barbless. Barbless hooks are a good idea when you’re releasing your fish because you don’t harm it as much. Another thing – a good pair of pliers is handy for getting hooks out of fish. Just get a grip near the bend of the hook with your pliers and twist out gently. Good Luck!

A skiff smaller than 8 feet is really going to take off with an outboard of 5-horsepower or more. A 3-horsepower unit would probably be plenty.

If your fish on the beach like in Hawaii or the West coast, use real bait and not artificial lures so that the fish can smell it rather than try to look for it in the white water of all the waves. try to find a place near a pier or some type of rock that sticks out. Usually there will be lots of small fish which means plenty of BIG fish. One last thing, Fishing early in the morning or late at night will improve your chances because that is when fish usually looking for food to eat. Live bait will be 99.9% most of the time better than dead bait.

remember pack21 a bullhead is a kind of catfish and there are two things that catfish love crafish and cut shad to use crafish to catch catfish take the hook and push it threw the back and gently mash the guts then take the hook out and hook it in the tail this puts out a sent that catfish can’t resist and with the shad cut it so it bleeds but isin’t dead hook it well and let it sit so the fish can smell it and want to eat it and the same with the crafish let them sit so be patient and it will pay off

Learn to fly-fish! You will learn a different way to fish, impress your friends, learn some new fishing knots, and be more successful.
spinnerbaits are good for structure. dont use deep divers around trees or deep weeds if ur not prepared to loose ‘em.
If you catch a crayfish, hook it through the tail and/or back and cast in deep water.

I went fishing at Lake Powll and i caught three catfish one bass and also i caught a carp just by scoping it up with a net. And The bait is dead minos,corn chips, chetos and popcorn.Then I cooked them up by making a fire with my army sweadish firesteel and they were so good!
I caut a 5 lb. bass on a mini fines worm. I have also caut bunches of bluegill on this bait.
On a 3 hour Fishing trip I caught 19 fish, mostly red grouper.
Buddy dont listen to them all you need to do is try varaious types of baits and see what works and what doesnt. I suggest you use corn, bread, hotdogs,red worms for bass and pan fish. Stink Baits/Dough Balls,Chicken Livers should be used for catfish. and always try diffrent lures diffrent seasons. I ounce tried a skitter pop and i got a 28 inch bass it was huge. (when useing a lure make sure it looks real i sugest rapala . they cost alot but the will pay off)
in the delta use a whole anchovie w/ two hooks on each side head and tail make sure you have 50 pound test our you line will snap oh, make sure you wrap the hooks around the anchovie keep the drag open so you can hear the the reel, when you cast keep the drag closed … i catch usely stripe bass or catfish the bigest ive catched was at least 19 to 28 inch stiped bass
I once caught a 10 lb bass on my hometown lake and it was only 6 oz from the lake record. I caught it off my neighbors dock with a secret bait. I could fit my hand in its mouth it was so big and in the water it looked even bigger. We released it later that day with an awesome story to tell and pics to back it up.

peanut shells work very good. where i come from we use all kinds of things as bait,
such as canned corn. but the chemicals in peanut shells will help yall catch a biggin.

I think that these suggesttions are only for beginners really, I go fishing quite often, but, I would not follow these rules, but that is just my opinion.
Instead of using gloves, just wet your hands.Circle hooks also help because it hooks on the side of the mouth.

A tip for fishing is even if you don’t catch anything have fun.
If the hook gets caught in the gills or eye and the chance of survival is low, break the fish’s neck. If you do it right, it is a quick and un-painful way to put it out of it’s misery.

Fishing is great I love to fish rivers lakes ect. sometimes its easy to get the hook out with your hand but sometimes if its hard don’t hesitate use a tool
wearing gloves can still remove the slime. so that you dont remove the slime you need wet hands. if you are affrade to touch them then wear gloves that have been soaked in water.
When you catch a fish always be gentle, and don’t hook yourself!
Use gloves so u do not remove the slime , it is the fishes way of protecting its self from harmful parasites . If u don’t have gloves get your hands wet before handling fish please.
another good way to get hold of a fish:
use a washcloth/ something like it to grip it
if u’re in a lake, gently pull the fish back n forth till it swims away. and don’t toss it in the water; put it in the water gently.

This is very interesting, but fairly useless (but the inforation I agree is valuable and fascinating). But useless because if hand washing washes the need to justify a way.
This is a good digram of the nail knot ,,,but when tying leader to fly line take a needle or dubbing needle works best and make a hole in the center of your fly line and go in about an 1/4 inch deep and back out the side and then tye the nail knot on the line ,use a dab of head cement to seal and this will give you a straight runoff from your fly line to the leader.

this sounds very intresting. I should try it. This sounds easier to do than catching one in a net or even my bare hands!(I have caught a minnow those two ways, but this will be better!)
i just got back from trying TYE IT TO THE TREE OR DOCK BEFORE THROWING IT IN THE WATER because i threw it and the rope slipped from my hand and all was lost!
This trap works so well i built it at 4:00pm and put it in the water half an hour later
Then i came back at 6:00 and there were 18 minnows and 1 snail!!!
the only problem is that craw fish work better as bait. =:(
u guys should invent a craw fish trap like this. i mean u might catch one in this trap but that is just by luck.

I tried it and it works SO WELL!!! ( Here’s a tip minnows arn’t the only fish that can come into these traps don’t just put bread crawfish LOVE meat so if you have ANY kind of meat ad it. ) I caught about 6 crawfish 12 tadpoles & 18 minnows!! This invention is SWEET!!
I will try this on the Juniata River, but try gum as bait because it will last longer and will spread more scent through the water
I tried this project with two 24oz bottles and duct tape, and within 2 and a half hours, I had caught a three and a half in long trout. Also, instead of using bread I used Wheat Thins, and I did this in a small creek instead of a pond.

this trap really works i set it out overnight and caught 17 minnows and 2 tadpoles.
I just have to try that the next time that I go fishing. Mabye I can bring it to summer camp and use it.
Here’s a tip: cut a small circle of window screen a little bigger than the inside cap (ask your parents first), and make a hole in the top of the inside cap and tie the window screen to the inside part of the cap, and if you put it in a river, point the trap the same way the river is flowing so when the window screen opens the minnows can get in, but cannot get out.

this trap totally works i caught 8 minnows, 4 chubs, 3 red tail minnows, 1 sucker fish …..and even a really small (baby) trout. of course i made my minnow trap much larger by using 3 …3 liter bottles i use the 3rd as a middle extension
but i use a little different materials
i use a wood burner for holes just because its faster the nail method will work great but takes a little longer .
And to connect all parts i use bread ties AND BEFORE I PUT IT TOGETHER I PUT A FEW SMALL ROCKS IN IT TO WEIGH IT DOWN.

1 more thing …when you add the middle part burn 2 holes parallel to one another and then put the bread ties in to connect them.
1 more thing again pull trap in slowly and its a little safe if you use more then 1 line to pull it in for example 1 line at each segment or 1 line at each end.
This trap is really worth taking the 15 minutes to make it and give it a try. I think it works better than most ideas.
minnows aren’t that smart but they are not stupid. (beleive me i have tried)

well you can always take about 8 bucks and get one from wally world but the bottle does make sense its basically the same structure just that its made of wire, and if someone steals your bottle oh well a coke bottle isnt as high as a metal one and you can make those at will im going to give it a try with the one i bought, what can it hurt but just a little time out of your day. i suggest anyone go for it, good luck and be safe in the water everyone and have fun

I have made similar traps before as a kid to catch minnows and they do work. My only suggestion is to put the bait in a nylon stocking to help keep the bait in the trap longer.

Hmm … I’m not so sure that invention will work so well. The fish are probably smart enough to get out of the trap. Here’s one way that works for me that is much faster. You will need a window screen about 3′x3′ — anything around that size will work. You will also need some fishing line and a piece of bait that is solid and will not fall off if tied (e.g. a shrimp or some tough meat from mom’s beef stew last night, etc.). First, string about a foot of the fishing line through the center of the screen and tie it off in the middle of the line. Then, place the bait atop the line and securely tie the bait down. Then, cut the string into four equal sections. Tie each length of line to each corner of the screen. Drop the screen into the water, holding the four strings. Then, busy yourself for about 15 minutes. Return to the site and pull up the screen, making sure that each line is level. You will have a large catch of fish in a much shorter time.

try a rainbow trout spiner. I caught a two foot pike one and a lot of other fish. also try a gray and blak rapela lure in the early moning. I caught two fish that really fought and two jumped straight into the air!!!!:)
there r 4 foot catfish in the lake where i live and i use smaller sunnys as bait
dont use spoons in fresh water. use strike king spinnerbaits, plastic worms, and wordens original roostertails for big bass

i catch alot of native trout that way
I live about a mile from a creek so i walk down there. my brother and his friend fish the same spot using worms with no luck. I go down to a part where the stream is ten feet wide with broken branches lined everywhere and walk home with the most fish using a soft plastic grub with single tail. (only sunfish though)
now i don’t have to spend forever trying to catch fish
what i would do fish and go up stream or scar the fish up the stream block the cracks then i will block the other end off. Then thay would have no where to go to get away from me then i can catch them & eat them for dinner to night.

I don’t know where you live but most states require that you have a fishing license at all bodies of water unless it’s at a specific fish hatchery.

This is a great merit badge. I have a resident fishing license in my home state and I have the non-resident fishing licenses in two states where I can go fishing when school is out for the summer and I travel on summer vacation. Why are there different size regulations and creel regulations on the number of fish that may be harvested in states who share the same body of water such as the fishing regulations in the large bay that is so large that it is contained in the states of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia where there is flounder season during the summer? Being able to catch and release fish from the fishing line is a great skill. The catch and release fishing technique is very important to not harvest either the wrong size of game fish or if a closed season fish decides to eat the bait from my fish hook when I intended for a fish that is permitted to be harvested is supposed to come to my line?

When I fish the river and come up on these “limb lines” I cut em up. Where I come from people like to set up 100′s of lines on the river and only remember a few at a time. It kills fish unnecessarily and causes unwanted mess. My advice for anyone doin this is to make sure you watch your lines closely, don’t let them sit for days at a time.

hey, another tip is to use chicken liver to catch fish.you can get it at any supermarket, it usually comes frozen and is very smelly (thats great for catfish) so wwatch where you put it
good tips. the next time i go fishing for catfish i will use limb lines and the tips you gave me.
this is for noulin, the reason you didn’t catch any catfish with a worm is because catfish are bottom feeders. You need smelly like cheese or shrimp (basically any thing like leftover chicken from supper)
limb lines are illegal in some areas check your local laws before using them

hey what will work for fishing on the bank for catfish and how far out do i throw the line out i went catfishing yesterday and cot dram insted of catfish we were using worms why was we not cathing catfish.
Limb lines work great, but they take out some of the fun of reeling a 20 pounder. but if you are desprate and only want food, limb lines are the way to go. Oh yea, try bits of hotdog for carp and catfish!
