Scientists have announced the discovery of an enormous lizard called the Varanus bitatawa. Long known to local hunters, this lizard lives in the Philippines. It stretches to about six-and-a-half feet long and weighs about 22 pounds.
This new lizard is closely related to the Komodo dragon. But, unlike the Komodo, the Varanus bitatawa is a vegetarian. This species eats fruit and is very secretive. Scientists say the discovery “comes as an unprecedented surprise.”
