Swamp Sting mystery

When Lt. Ramirez of the Miami police heard Mac King‘s Magic in Minute Road Show was performing at a theater on the very edge of town, across the street from a possible crime scene, he called the magician over to help.

Mac and Kelly found the detective drinking coffee on a dirt track overlooking a vast, swampy area. A short middle aged man stood beside him.

“Meet Salvage Sam,” said Ramirez. “Sam runs a junkyard called Auto Heaven. He happened to be walking along the path when I drove up.

“What’s the crime?” asked Kelly as she kicked the thick red dust from her shoes.

“Larceny. An armored car was held up for a million in cash, but the getaway car disappeared while we were in pursuit. We think the car and the money are at the bottom of this swampy glade.”

Kelly bent over to peer into the murky water. Her query was met with a violent explosion as two hungry alligators sprung forward.

Salvage Sam chuckled. “Anybody dumping a car in there must have a death wish. You could let it drive itself in, but you’d never get it back out with those gators around.”

Mac stared at the ground for a moment, then took a paper clip out of his pocket. “Reminds me of a trick,” Mac said dropping the clip into the lieutenant‘s cup of coffee.

“What‘s the idea?” asked Ramirez.

“Simple,” said Mac. “See if you can figure out a way to extract the paper clip without putting anything in the coffee or moving the cup.”

After several minutes the detective shook his head. Mac smiled and asked Kelly if she would solve the trick. When she did, Ramirez nodded and slapped his hand-cuffs onto Salvage Sam. Why?

Solution: Kelly used a magnet and, dragging it along the outside of the cup, removed the paper clip. As the owner of an auto salvage yard, Sam would have access to a large crane magnet. It would be simple to bring it to the sparsely populated area, avoid the alligators, and pull the car out when no one was around. When Mac stared at the ground, he was actually looking at Salvage Sam‘s shoes which were completely free of dust, as if Sam had driven to the area and not been walking along the dirt track as he‘d told Detective Ramirez.
