Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

This is a photo of a female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. The Hummingbirds body is weird, they have extremely short legs preventing it from walking or hopping. The best it can do is shuffle along the perch. Nevertheless, it scratches its head and neck by raising its foot up and over its wing. So to counteract its lack of mobility in its feet, it makes it up in its wings. The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird beats its wings 53 times a second. They are able to rotate their wings 180 degrees enabling the bird to fly not only forwards and backwards, but also to hover in mid-air..
