Scouting Around

Long, Hard Ride

The distance from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina, covers more than 20,000 miles. Eagle Scout Eric Fiala biked every last one of them in 19 months and 13 days, all in the name of adventure and autism awareness. During the journey, he was hit by a car, mugged and thrown from his bike into a tree. But Eric never stopped peddling, not until he reached the end of his ride Feb. 2, 2009.

Boys’ Life recently spoke to Eric about his wild ride. Read about it in the May 2010 issue of BL, and listen to exclusive excerpts by clicking on the audio players below:

The Scouting Around blog is your source for Scouting news. Get ideas for your troop by reading about Scouting activities across the country. Biking in Buffalo? Caving in California? Fishing in Florida? Mountain climbing in Montana? Shooting in South Carolina? It's all right here.

Is your unit going on a great fishing trip? Or maybe you’re taking an awesome trek in the mountains or a cool dive under the sea? Whatever your adventure, Boys’ Life might want to tag along.

We’re deciding which Super Scouting Outings to feature in future issues, and your trip could be next. But we need to hear about it as far in advance as possible.
